Describe the company – the elevator pitch …

We all very different tastes and diets. Some of us love chicken, others find it boring. Some of us love pasta, others avoid it. Mizu is a new mobile app for iPhone which helps you find dishes at nearby restaurants that match your taste. Think of it as a matching-making app for food – finding you the perfect dish. How are you different?

Mizu is totally unique as we are far more interested in knowing whether or not you like bread, tomato sauce, and cheese, rather than just “Pizza”. Most other platforms just do a generic search for Pizza without understanding if you like salami, pork, sweetcorn, etc. We are all about the details of your taste.

Why will the company / product do well?

Taste in food is like our taste in music, it is truly a unique opinion. Your mood, time of the day or week, the weather, everything influences your taste. It’s always changing. We believe if we can understand taste and diet, then we create tremendous value for both customers and businesses.

Based in Dublin. The internet connection is pretty good. 🙂 We’re here indefinitely, but intent to scale to new cities.

When was the company launched?

We launched our beta app in May 2015.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

Firstly, launching the Mizu consumer app was a huge win, then came launching Mizu for Business. This lead to us getting the first restaurants verified and on-board. We want to keep the momentum going.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?

Everyone eats, so everyone can get value out of Mizu. However, so far, we have seen that people aged between 18-35 are the most responsive, but we believe Mizu is a product that everyone will use – because just like Music, taste is applicable to everyone.

We are a team of two.

Youssef Sarhan – Designer & Co-Founder [left]. A designer with experience in founding startups, and being part of larger venture-backed companies.

Apisit Toompakdee [right] – Engineer & Co-Founder. A productive engineer with a strong sense of focus and detail, and how he can best apply his expertise to growth.

We have worked together for over 3 years, and sold our last startup to a company in San Francisco.

What are you long term plans for your product / company?

We believe Mizu will become the go-to product for food discovery. Mizu (me-zoo) means “water” in Japanese, we called it “water”, because water goes with any meal, and similarly, Mizu will be a perfect accompaniment to any meal.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

Without a doubt, the smartphone. It’s not really a gadget, but it’s super-useful. With the tap of button you can pretty much find the answer to any question. You can calculate any sum, have a car pick you up in a matter of minutes, you can even book a flight in seconds. It’s really quite amazing when you think about it.

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

Honestly, if there was an additional gadget that we felt we should be using, we’d be using it. Hmm.. winter is coming however, so maybe a pair of slippers.
