First Women’s Crypto Curry Club held in London

The original Crypto Curry Club was formed in 2018 by Erica Stanford in response to the lack of opportunities in the London blockchain and tech space to get to know people well. Typically at meet-ups or networking events, people sit in a row of other attendees to listen to a talk, or people are left alone to mingle, but often without formal introductions or any introductions for that matter. It’s a well-known fact that it is easier to get to know people when sat around a table over food.  And so The London Crypto Curry Club was borne. It is invite only and welcomes founders and leaders in crypto, blockchain and emerging tech, as well as those in other industries who want to explore these technologies.

People who attend are founders or high level management within crypto, blockchain or tech companies, some are working in tech or as developers, some are in tech PR or media, some are working on exciting new projects, and some are senior leaders from non-related companies or industries who want to see if or how to implement digital currencies or blockchain/ DLT technology. Relationships are forming and partnerships are already happening between members.

While the original Crypto Curry Club is very active in London, other curries now taking place in Bristol, Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds, Manchester and Cardiff.

However, after Erica got the Crypto Curry Club up and running she discovered that up to 90% of attendees at her normal Crypto Curry Clubs and emerging tech networking events were men.

Erica explains: “I then went through my linkedin connections to try and find more women in tech, and counted the gender balance. I was shocked that more than 95% of all my tech contacts were men. So my aim was to create a women-only lunch, the Women’s Crypto Curry Club, as a once off event to meet more women in the space and by extension diversify the gender pool for the normal mixed networking events.

“So while the idea was to broaden the reach and improve the gender balance of the Curry Club, it turned out to be a really nice lunch and was much more relaxed than the mixed ones.”

The first Women’s Crypto Curry Lunch had 15 people in attendance including a partner from a law firm, female founders in blockchain projects, female executives working for blockchain projects in difference sectors including marketing, PR and recruitment for companies in the space.

Some of the companies that were represented were Wirex, Radix, Ocean Protocol and Ashurst LLP.

“We had some very good conversations, including discussing how cards such as Wirex will help cryptocurrency payments and acceptance become mainstream by having one user-friendly card that anyone can use anywhere, without having to go near a high-street bank,” said Erica.
