The Irish Data Protection Commissioner has begun an investigation into Facebook and it’s activities outside the US and Canada according to RTE. Because Facebook’s European headquarters are located in Dublin a group called Europe versus Facebook has brought 22 complaints to the DPC about how Facebook retains users data.
We mentioned yesterday about Facebook monitoring users even after they’ve logged out and this seems to follow on from that. The group points to the fact that the “Like” button creates data that can be used to track users over the internet as well as the fact that messages can be seen even after they’re deleted.
The Irish DPC has stated that this is to be the largest investigation it has ever undertaken and the issue for Facebook now is that the findings could have far reaching consequences for Facebook if they are found to be in violation of data protection laws.
