eir Launches Ireland’s Fastest 5 Gigabit Broadband

eir, Ireland’s leading telecommunications provider, today announces the nationwide launch of its ultra-fast 5 Gigabit (5Gb) fibre broadband, setting a new benchmark for speed, performance, and connectivity in Irish homes.

This follows eir’s February rollout of Ireland’s first WiFi 7 system, introducing Wide-Fi, a cutting-edge mesh network that eliminates dead zones and supports up to 200 devices—delivering speeds twice as fast as WiFi 6.

eir has built Ireland’s largest fibre network, now available to more than 1.3 million homes and businesses —and expanding every day. As part of a €1.7 billion investment in digital infrastructure, eir is upgrading eligible 2Gb customers on its WiFi 7-powered Wide-Fi system to 5Gb speeds — significantly enhancing how people work, stream, and connect.

eir’s powerful new 5Gb speed tier is available today — and as a major bonus, thousands of customers who signed up for WiFi 7 and 2 Gigabit fibre plans earlier this year will be automatically upgraded at no extra cost.

The launch comes at a perfect time, as one of the world’s most anticipated game updates is set to drop in the coming days. With an estimated 80GB download size, eir 5Gb fibre can handle the entire update in as little as two minutes—more than twice as fast as 2Gbps connections—ensuring less time waiting and more time playing.

“With 5Gb speeds and cutting-edge WiFi 7, eir is delivering the ultimate broadband experience for busy modern homes—where everyone is online, all at once, for everything from streaming the latest GAA match to studying, gaming, working remotely, or simply unwinding with a movie,” said Kealan Donoghue, Managing Director of eir’s Consumer and Small Business Division.

“Only eir offers this powerful combination of next-generation WiFi 7 and 5Gb fibre connectivity in Ireland—making us the clear choice for families who expect more from their internet. With the launch of 5Gb fibre, we’re offering customers next-generation connectivity at incredible value, and we’re proud to reward our early adopters by upgrading their service for free.”

eir 5Gb fibre isn’t just for gaming and streaming—it’s engineered to support the evolving needs of modern households and businesses:

—  Reliable, multi-device smart home support
—  Ultra-low latency for online gaming and AR/VR experiences
—  Lightning-fast cloud access for remote work and content creation
—  Seamless 4K/8K streaming, HD video calls, and file transfers—all at once

From 4 June, eir’s 5Gb broadband with WiFi 7 replaces the 2Gb plan for eir customers, available from just €49.99 per month —significantly undercutting rival offerings. eir customers benefit from the latest WiFi 7 technology for superior in-home performance.

With fibre-to-the-home usage up nearly 40% year-on-year, eir continues to expand its future-ready network to meet growing demand.
