Dont forget the box.net free 50GB promotion

For sometime now Box.net have been giving free 50GB online storage plans to select customers of some tablet devices. BlackBerry Playbook users have had the offer since October of 2011. They’ve now extended that offer to Android users. All you need is one of the following devices and the corresponding app:

  • Android phones and tablets: Now through 11:59PM on 3/23/12, log into Box for Android on your phone or tablet to get your upgrade automatically.
  • LG Android phones and tablets: Now through 6/30/12, download Box for Android on your device and sign in to get your upgrade automatically.
  • Sony Tablet S and Tablet P: Now through 12/31/12, download Box for Android on your tablet and sign in to get your upgrade automatically.
  • HP TouchPad: Now through 12/31/12, download Box for TouchPad on your tablet and sign in to get your upgrade automatically.
  • RIM PlayBook: Now through 12/31/12, download Box for PlayBook on your tablet and sign in to get your upgrade automatically.
  • Sony Ericsson Xperia phones: Now through 12/31/12, download Box for Android on your smartphone and log in to get your upgrade automatically.
  • Apple devices: This promotion has ended.

Unfortunately the offer has ended for iOS devices but the rest have until the end of 2012 to take advantage. As with all of these types of offers there are a few caveats:

  • The largest file size you can upload is 100mbs
  • Bandwidth is capped at 10GB’s a month
  • Box.net add’s it’s own time stamp to files at the time of upload this replacing the time the file originally had

Box.net isn’t bad but I think that both sugarsync and dropbox have a slight edge in having apps for all Android iOS and BlackBerry devices. Still, it’s hard to say no to 50GB’s of storage. As with everything it’s best to have multiple forms of backup and not to just rely on one system.

Let us know what you think.
