When and where is it on?
The Cyber Security Conference (Transatlantic Policy Forum) will be held on May 10th at The Brehon, Killarney
How many years has it been going?
This is the inaugural event.
What was the inspiration to start it?
The conference began from a conversation between Dr.Edward Burke of the University of Nottingham, and Dr.William Sheehan of Killarney Economic Conference, both are historians on conflict and terrorism. They reached out to David Crozier of Queens University Belfast and Dr.Robert Mauro of Boston College. All shared a common concern that cybercrime and cyber terrorism posed a unique problem for Ireland given the large number of US multinationals here. Dr.Sheehan agreed that Killarney Economic Conference would act as host. The goal is to create a transatlantic dialogue between government, business and academia that focuses on the best solutions, in terms of policy and technology that can protect people and business into the future.
What exciting things can people look forward to?
This conference is unique, it brings together key leaders in cybersecurity from Ireland, the UK and the United States, and from sectors such as defence, law enforcement, business and research for the first time in Ireland. Panels will explore how new partnerships can be created to face future threats both across sectors and countries, how those threats will evolve from state and non-state actors, and how the Irish government can support this emerging industry in Ireland, and how business can evolve and protect themselves into the future.
What opportunities are on offer for those attending?
As well as hearing the views, ideas and opinions of leading players in their industry, attendees will enjoy ample opportunities for networking.
What themes will be covered.
Emerging Trends in Cyber Attacks
The latest developments in cyber-attacks, and how the increasing dependency on cloud providers may create weaknesses will be discussed by Richard Browne, Director of Ireland’s National Cyber Security Centre; Gina Dollard, Cyber Threat Intelligence Manager, AIB; Ciaran Martin, Chief Executive of the National Cyber Security Centre, UK; and Conrad Prince, Distinguished Fellow and Senior Cyber Adviser, Royal United Services Institute.
Deterrence, Detection and Punishment: The Policing and Law Enforcement Perspective
The extent that divergence in regulatory and legal frameworks exacerbate vulnerability to cyber-attacks, how cybercriminals are evolving their capabilities to avoid detection and prosecution, the most successful investigative tools being deployed and the need for the rapid exchange of intel and data will be discussed by the second panel of speakers.
This panel includes Mandy Haeburn-Little, Chief Executive of the Scottish Business Resilience Centre; Detective Superintendent Michael Gubbins, Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau; Detective Inspector Alistair Burns, Serious Cyber Crime Unit, PSNI; Todd Renner, Special Agent and Assistant Legal Attaché FBI; and James Sullivan, Research Fellow in Cyber Threats and Cyber Security, Royal United Services Institute
Research and Innovation in Cyber Security
With a global skills shortage of almost 3 million, and a projected global market for cyber security products and services of almost $250 billion by 2023, research and innovation can truly have impact. The third panel discussion will focus on the unsolved challenges of cyber security and the new technologies that could emerge.
This panel includes David Crozier, Head of Strategic Partnerships and Engagement, Centre for Secure Information Technologies and ECIT, Queens University Belfast; Prof. Máire O’Neill, Principal Investigator, Centre for Secure Information Technologies and ECIT, Queens University Belfast; Marc French, Senior Vice President and Chief Trust Officer at Mimecast; Jacky Fox, Cyber and IT Forensic Lead at Deloitte and lecturer on Information Security in UCD; Keith Lippert, Vice President and Deputy Information Security Officer at Allstate; Paul Wickens, CEO of Enterprise Shared Services and CIO for the Northern Ireland Civil Service

Powers, Director of M.S. Cybersecurity Policy and Governance, Boston College.
