Could eSIM be the future for Ireland?

eSIM options for your phone could well be the way forwards for us and our mobile phone usage habits. It is now possible to also use this option in Ireland. In this article we look at the current state of play, and options available for eSIM usage in Ireland.

When travel restrictions open up the eSIM will provide certain benefits such as cheap roaming outside of the EU and the fact you don’t have to remove your existing SIM/buy a local SIM.

eSIM may be something to consider for your future mobile phone usage. You can see more about them here. Using an eSIM within Ireland right now enables you to do the following:

  1. To have two mobile numbers/plans in one device, which is useful for a personal line and business line
  2. The ability to then be able to switch between networks – helpful for those in remote areas where coverage is variable, and often better for one network or another
  3. To be able to access more affordable international calling

While not all phones are able to run eSIMs most new ones do have the capacity to run them. It is important to check that your phone is compatible with using an eSIM first though. So far it seems that the following phones are compatible with using the eSIM option.

Current eSIM enabled phones are as follows:

Brand Device Type Model
Apple Phone iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, XS, XS Max, XR
Tablet iPad Mini (5th gen.), iPad (7th gen.), iPad Air (3rd gen.), 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd gen.), 11-inch iPad Pro
Samsung Phone S20, S20+, S20 Ultra, Z Flip, Galaxy Fold
Google Phone Pixel 3, 3 XL, 3a, 3a XL , 4, 4 XL
Motorola Phone Razr
Microsoft Tablet Surface Pro X, Surface Pro with LTE Advanced

The set up procedure is fairly straightforward. You need to go via the website and choose and pay for the package you want online at eSIM.net.

A typical package would be a Pay As You Go option with Voice, SMS & Data (found on all of our country pages on the website as it works globally). You then receive a QR code, which they emaile to you with instructions on how to activate and set-up your APN and plan.

This way of setting up credit on a phone could work well if you have kids who are due to be going away from you for a period of time, on a school trip for example. To ensure that they can communicate with you, but not with unlimited credit. This makes sense and is a smart way to set it up.

What is an eSIM and why it might be the future for us?

If you were wondering ->

An eSIM (“Embedded Subscriber Identification Module”) is a small chip that is embedded inside many of the latest devices. It can work concurrently with a physical SIM card, offering two mobile numbers and cellular plans in one device. Unlike a physical SIM card, an eSIM can be reprogrammed to any mobile network and cannot be removed.

You may already see how this could be useful. No more issues in terms of damage or wear and tear on your traditional SIM card, if it is digital instead.
