Connect Centre to shape Internet of Things future

Trinity College Dublin has become the first Irish university to join the LoRa Alliance, an international organisation encouraging the rapid development and deployment of Internet of Things applications.

Trinity’s involvement with LoRa will be via Connect, the Science Foundation Ireland research centre for Future Networks and Communications headquartered at the college.

Welcoming the news, Professor Linda Doyle, Director of Connect said: “Our membership of the LoRa Alliance places us alongside world leading companies such as IBM, Cisco and Orange. It provides a fantastic opportunity for Trinity and Connect to shape the Internet of Things future.

“Connect’s Pervasive Nation programme is currently building a nationwide Internet of Things testbed to facilitate extensive pre-commercial research. It will largely use Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) Networks. These are an excellent connectivity solution and we are particularly interested in the capabilities and potential of the LoRa version of this technology.”

Chair of the LoRa Alliance, Geoff Mulligan, said:

“The LoRa Alliance is delighted to have Trinity College Dublin as an Institutional Member. It means Ireland will keep pace with, and shape, the rapidly evolving Internet of Things scene.

“Trinity’s Connect Centre will bring excellent research expertise as we work together to enable connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) applications such as smart cities and industrial applications.

“The Alliance was initiated by industry leaders to standardise Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN). The LoRaWAN technology will allow Pervasive Nation to provide an open IoT research connectivity infrastructure.”

Pervasive Nation is currently being rolled out across Connect’s partner Higher Education Institutes across Ireland.
