Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) will host an Open Data Hackathon on Saturday, May 18th. It aims to encourage the development of products and services that combine data analytics (DA) and artificial intelligence (AI) with data sourced from the national Open Data portal (data.gov.ie).
It will include mentoring from experts in their respective fields (DA/AI), and submissions will be judged by an expert panel from industry.
The Open Data Hackathon will bring together several vibrant communities, primarily DA and AI. These communities encompass a sector of the economy that is experiencing significant growth and is projected to do so for the foreseeable future.
“The prevalence of tech events and companies in the Cork area are indicative of the booming technology sector. Our hope for the Open Data Hackathon is that we can match this technical depth with individuals who are passionate about positive change in society and want to contribute to their community” says Dr Ruairí O’Reilly, Lecturer in Computer Science in CIT.
CIT has extensive expertise in the fields of Data Science, Machine Learning, Computer Science, and advanced Mathematical and Statistical Modelling. The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics both offer postgraduate programmes that strongly align with the realization of the Open Data Governance Board Mandate.
The Open Data Hackathon is being sponsored by the Open Data Engagement Fund in the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, Poppulo, Johnson Controls and the Central Statistics Office. These sponsors are “a testament to the strength of the tech sector in the region, and it is to their credit that they recognize the importance of open data in modern society and are willing to support its use for the building of new products and services”, concluded Dr O’Reilly.
Poppulo’s head of engineering, Damien Daly, said that the company is totally committed to supporting local tech initiatives such as the hackathon in any way it can: “we know how important a vibrant technology sector is for the future of the country, and for Cork in particular and we are delighted to be able to back it and show tangible support.”
