Describe the company – the elevator pitch
Youipcams are a small startup company based in the Sydney, Australia but also have team members strategically positioned around the globe. We are a small yet diverse group of passionate individuals that share a desire to make this world a safer place. Our company wanted to enter the market by producing a cost-effective end-to-end encrypted cloud IP security camera with a built-in ‘hub’. We have many other projects in the works but wanted to start with a strong product and we believe that the creation of our mobile app is a huge step in the right direction.
How are you different?
Previous companies have developed apps that allow mobile phones and tablets to be used as security cameras in the DIY smart home defense lineup, but no one has yet to add the encryption piece. We are also rolling out an E2EE indoor cloud camera by the end of the year and will be launching a video doorbell early next year that has the same capability.
Why will you do well?
The conversation about privacy concerns has been drastically increased since 2010. There are more and more reports of security breaches and hacking taking place every day, and we want to be part of the solution. Video streams from our camera will not be susceptible to viewing if intercepted. Any tablet/mobile phone/third party camera will be encrypted with our app and the app can also act as a smart home hub for most of your Z-wave smart home devices. The video time-lapse feature does not require going to a separate website in order to view the footage, nor do we require any processing time when others do. We also offer a very affordable cloud storage plan, which can be catered to the needs of each unique customer.

Where are you based?
The company is based in Sydney Australia, but our Global Business Development Manager is based in Austin, Texas USA, and we have a software development team in China. We also have a few quality assurance team members based in Japan.
When was the company launched?
The company officially launched a little over 2 years ago.
What have been your biggest wins to date?
We completed a Kickstarter Campaign that began in August of this year. Although we didn’t raise all of the revenue we needed to fund our indoor security camera, we were able to get the word out about our company and our mobile App. Also successfully integrating the encryption with our products has been a huge win. We have a great team of developer that work extremely hard, and we are please with the end result.
Who are you trying to attract to your product?
We have a pretty broad demographic. We are going after individuals in the 25-65 age bracket that have shown a concern for privacy invasion and the DIY smart home community. This is such a large group, which is why we want to make our products affordable, but also of the highest quality.
What tips would you give to others looking to build their business?
Do your research! There are so many great free resources available to growing businesses and a little research can go a long way in terms of the value that is added to your business strategy. Don’t let the minor setbacks stifle your dream. Not every day is going to be easy, but it has been important for our team to keep looking forward and learn from our mistakes. Lastly, I would say to remember to have some fun. This is hard work and it can be extremely tedious at times, but there has to be some balance or you will lose your mind. Sometimes it’s much better to step away from something and relax or have some fun so that you can come back to your project refreshed and energized.
Tell us about your team?
Frank He is our director and had previously been in the mobile and home security industry for the last 10 years. He is also the proud father of 3 girls and he couldn’t understand how no one had created a technology to protect home security video footage from being skimmed. Frank started his own company and began to work with the software development team to create the mobile app and then on to the Indoor camera a little over 2 years ago.
Jacob Whisnant is our Global Business Development Manager who came on board with the company during the Kickstarter Campaign. He and his family have recently left Sydney and relocated to Austin, Texas so that he can help bring the company products and services to the US market.
What are your plans for the future?
The app has successfully launched in the App Store and Google Play store. We will be launching our Haicam Indoor Cloud Camera later this year through Amazon.com and other channels. We have a battery operated video doorbell that will be coming to market early next year and then we will continue to expand the product line to offer outdoor cameras and other home security devices as well.
What are your favorite tech gadgets?
We are always curious to see what new gadget Apple is working on, and I’m sure that it’s no big surprise that The iPhone X is probably highest on our radar at the current moment. We are also always on the lookout for new home security products (cameras, video doorbells, etc.) so that we can see what we are up against in the market.
What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?
On our busy days, we could all agree that having some sort of artificial intelligence to help us would be amazing, but there is still some concern about AI being fully figured out. Besides, we don’t have Will Smith’s contact details so we wouldn’t know what to do if the robots decided to take over.
Anything else you’d like to add/we should have asked?
