Stratio is a Big Data company that accompanies businesses on their journey through complete Digital Transformation. Our goal is to help the biggest sectors face the myriad of challenges and seize the opportunities that the digital revolution offers.
Our product is primarily used by large corporations in the areas of banking, telecom, insurance, retail and industry – Companies and organisations that have a high volume of data and are looking to become Digital.
Society has changed, daily habits are changing and companies need to keep up. In 2012, an emerging Big Data technology named Spark appeared in the Apache open source community. This was the seed that made Stratio a reality: A team of seasoned engineers came up with the idea of a product, based on this powerful technology, that would cover the current and upcoming challenges faced by traditional sectors due to the explosion of data. Stratio now owns the first product to be entirely based on this high-speed Big Data processing technology.
Digital transformation is not a product that you can just buy and install however, it is a complex process, a vision and a decision, lead from the top of the company, shared throughout the organisation, and executed in an empirical and pragmatic way.

Why Big Data?
Everything that happens in the physical world generates data – from interactions on social media to transactions at the bank. Companies are often at a loss as to what to do with this massive amount of information which needs management and analysis. Big Data refers to this management of large volumes – we’re talking in petabytes – of data to extract value. We define Big Data as distributed data in commodity hardware that scales horizontally. This is the type of Big Data that today’s leading companies are using.
One of the biggest problems for traditional sectors who are competing in this new ecosystem, is to decide which Big Data technology to use and for what. Big Data should not simply complement the outdated technologies that a company may be using. Companies should replace their legacy technologies with Big Data. They need to reinvent their business model around Big Data if they want to continue being leaders in their sector. This is the best way for Digital Transformation. In fact, it is the only way: if you don’t use Big Data, or at least data intelligence (extracting value from data), you won’t be able to transform. Using Big Data is what differentiates leaders (“Digital natives” like Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, eBay, PayPal…) from laggards in today’s new competitive landscape.

How are you different?
Stratio is the only company to exclusively use open source Big Data technologies and was the first company to create a pure spark Big Data platform. Thanks to our powerful operating system based on Mesos’ Open Source DC/OS (Data Center Operating System) and Dockers, it is much easier and faster for us to upgrade and evolve our product compared to the rest of products on the market today.
Complete infrastructure disruption is a rare offer. We pull our clients out of their comfort zones and push them to innovate and disrupt: They can achieve Digital Transformation with a single product – pretty impressive in our sector. What we have learnt over the years is that Big Data is complex and can emerge as a barrier for many companies. It is for this reason that we decided to create such an easy Big Data product to help reinvent companies around their data.
With our product, companies can reach the level of the aforementioned “digital natives” and meet the three objectives of Digital Transformation: Customer-centricity – to evolve with customers and adapt to them as fast as they require-, digital channels, prioritising mobile – to provide access to products and services through a seamless omnichannel at all times – and Data Intelligence – to take data-driven decisions in real time.
Where are you based?
Stratio currently has three offices: In Silicon Valley, in Madrid, Spain and in Bogotá, Colombia. The company is quickly expanding internationally and amongst our main goals for 2017 & 2018, we are looking to open offices in Europe and South America. Óscar Méndez, co-founder and CEO of Stratio knew that to have a great product and expand it globally, it was better to have an address in Silicon Valley, but Spain represented a clear niche market with a huge pool of talented people, which is why our largest office is in Madrid.
When was the company launched?
The company was launched in 2014 as a spin off of Paradigma Digital, a company created in 2007 that focuses on web technologies and is a reference in the market today with a yearly turnover of € 23 million (2016). In just three years, Stratio has become a leader in Big Data, with a growing headcount of over 200 employees, and boasting clients all over the world, including the likes of Carrefour, and Telefonica.
What have been your biggest wins to date?
We are very proud to have led the Digital Transformation of leading companies in each of the most important sectors, both from a strategic and tactical viewpoint: BBVA in the banking sector, Telefónica in telecommunications and Carrefour in retail. Since our creation we have seen these companies progress, improve their level of digital maturity, and enter a continuous process of digitalisation. They have become the best digital companion for their customers, are able to easily create better everyday services to immediately meet their needs and improve their daily lives and habits. Their success makes us happy.
What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?
Our products and services are primarily used by large corporations in the areas of banking, telecom, insurance, retail and industry. Companies and organisations that have a high volume of data and need a way to organise and transform it.
Tell us about your team?
At Stratio we believe in freedom and responsibility and therefore work in a non-hierarchical structure. Our founders have more than 20 years’ experience in Digital Transformation and are part of a team of 200 people that is rapidly growing. We call ourselves Stratians and together we represent one of the largest Big Data work forces in Europe. Stratio offers the possibility to work with the latest technologies and also strives to find the perfect work-life balance. We have flexible working schedules and are one of the first technological companies in Spain to offer the possibility to opt-in for what is known as an uninterrupted work day (8am to 3pm). This is because we want our Stratians to be happy and to have the opportunity for both professional and personal growth. We rely on agile methodologies that allow us to work efficiently through collaboration between self-organising cross-functional teams.
What are your long term plans for your company?
In terms of business plans, we started with the best and we’re aiming for the best. We are constantly looking to grow our team to bring together extremely talented people to create exceptional things. We have our eyes on Europe and then the world, to expand globally and lead the Digital Transformation of the Fortune Global 500 companies. Our goal is to offer these organisations the help they need and then allow them to go on their way to Digital Transformation. From a technological point of view, we want to continue building a strong open source community, to collaborate and innovate and of course, our overarching goal remains the same as always: to improve the world, company by company.
What are your favourite tech gadgets?
“We” equals 200 people so it is quite difficult to answer this question! Here are a few replies: Raspberry pi, Polar’s wearable sport watch, Synology NAS, the Espresso coffee machine, the Ableton launchpad and of course our smartphones!
