Describe the company – the elevator pitch …
Pleatpack design — is a company, that created first of its kind expandable urban backpack, called Pleatpack.
Its expandable system is made with the help of a good many of pleats, allowing you to wear a slim and comfortable backpack and ensuring that you can put in it as many things as you can put in your huge daypack. You won’t find any other backpack, able to expand up to 450 % of the original volume in one move.
How are you different?
Nowadays, there are lots of good offers on the backpack market. But they all have one common dark side: all of these backpacks make a person chose, what size of a backpack does he or she need. When you are on your way to work, all you need is a tablet and a couple of other small gadgets.
But you carry a big half-empty backpack all the day long just because you have plans to go shopping or to go to the gym in the evening. Or even worse, you have to take one more bag with you, since there is no more place in your backpack.
Why will you do well?
All our team members are quite young, and we all have very ambitious life plans. If we provide our backers with high-quality products, that will serve them for years, we’ll get all the necessary tools and reputation for further development of our ideas. If we fail to do so — bad reputation will destroy all our plans. So there is no doubt that we’ll do our best to live up to the trust of our backers.
Where are you based?
Our team is located in Kyiv — the capital of Ukraine. And our manufacturing partner is in Lviv. It’s just a few hours from Kyiv.
When was the company launched?
I put this team together 17 months ago.
Who are you trying to attract to your product?
Pleatpack was created by young people for modern needs. Our goal was to make a slim and comfortable backpack for urban dwellers, that adapts to your unpredictable daily situations. It has all the features, that you might need in your daily adventures. Starting with chest pockets for your cards or cash and ending with the easy cleanable mud-resistant base, so you don’t have to worry about dirty floors anymore.
What tips would you give to others looking to build their business?
Don’t underestimate feedback from your audience. You have to start communicating with potential clients even before starting your business. We started with questions on Quora and Reddit. But now I realize, we should’ve paid more attention to this.
Don’t neglect the communication. It’s very important.
Tell us about your team?
There are 3 active people in our project, and 3 more helping us from time to time. We’ve all met when we were first-grade students, and now we are something more than just friends. We create our common business together. The feeling is unbelievable. When you’re just a young start-up, all people that you need are already very close to you. And most likely, these people will be the first who believe in your idea.
Sometimes we fall back upon freelancers’ help. Mostly to translate texts into English. To be honest, our English is pretty bad. Considering the fact that we managed to create quite a good product and to launch quite a good Kickstarter campaign, I think I can say one thing that might be of use to your readers. If you know English — the world is your oyster. Trust me, I know how much easier it would be for me if I were proficient in English. Believe in yourself and go for it!
What are your favourite tech gadgets?
I don’t think that I have the favorite one. Modern technology is so developed that any product on the market is almost similar in quality and functionality to other competitors. We became witnesses of how Chinese phones have evolved from low standard and low-cost, into high-quality at a still low price. I don’t have a favorite technology brand, but studying the history of great technology companies makes me shiver. Each of them is full of examples of inspiring actions. Therefore, I’m not getting attached to any particular brand, but I’m totally into the philosophy and the history of each of them, and thus, into their gadgets.
