Photo2CAD CADify your world using only your smartphone.

Describe the company – the elevator pitch …

Photo2CAD are developing a mobile application to allow users to create fully scaled CAD drawings of objects and buildings by simply using their smartphone camera. Currently, the process of making CAD drawings of existing structures is entirely manual, requiring a measuring tape, a pencil, paper and a lot of time. The information is then manually input into CAD modelling software. Our technology has use in multiple industries and would prove a real time saver for architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and any professional that uses CAD software.

How are you different?

Our product is unique and that gives the user the power to convert their surroundings into CAD drawings. By just adding one measurement to your picture you can generate a fully scaled CAD drawing. We are taking a manual process and automating it.

Why will the company / product do well?

Photo2CAD is disruptive in an industry where manual measurements are still the standard. Our app utilises a smartphone with a combination of image processing methods to generate CAD files. The user is able to quickly generate CAD drawings from any object or building, cutting the time and complexity of previous methods. This greatly reduces the amount of time these professionals spend doing remedial tasks.

Where are you based?

For the past four months our office has been out in the DCU Innovation Campus. This has been thanks to the UStart accelerator programme we’ve been on. It’s a great environment as you’re surrounded by lots of companies at various stages of their development – there’s fantastic internet too since it’s connected to the DCU network.

When was the company launched?

We’re still building the product and haven’t launched yet. The idea was born from a project I worked on while in DCU and we are still creating the product around this. Within the next eight months we expect to release the first version of Photo2CAD.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

Winning the DCU President’s Award for Innovation was a great achievement. It earned us good press and helped get us onto the UStart accelerator programme – where we recently won best company at the UStart demo day. We were also a finalist in the Engineers Ireland Innovation awards, and took second place at Google’s Startup Weekend.

What type of people are you trying to attract to your product?

Mainly small to medium sized businesses that consume a lot of resources through on-site measurements – so architects and engineers but also carpenters, joiners, and designers. Photo2CAD will be able to save each of them time in various aspects of their project work.

Tell us about your team?
Our small team has a range of experience, coming from multinational tech companies, research institutions and other successful startups. We are looking to add more developers, especially with experience in image processing, so if you think this could be up your street – send an email to [email protected].

What are you long term plans for your product / company?

The Android version of Photo2CAD is currently in development and will be released first. An iOS version will follow and a desktop client offering after that. The goal will be to create an end-to-end package whereby capturing photos, converting them, and then exporting them to a chosen CAD software package is a seamless experience.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

My Samsung Galaxy S6. I can’t wait for Samsung Pay to come to Ireland.

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

We’d love to explore the application of our technology on the multi-camera tablets that are coming out, like Google’s Project Tango and the Intel RealSense. It would also be interesting to see how we could apply it to AR helmets like the Microsoft Hololens and the DAQRI.
