Travel Wifi are an Irish company setup with the aim of removing expensive data roaming charges for people travelling abroad. Setup in 2013, Travel Wifi currently employ three people and offer their services in countries across Europe and in the U.S.
We had a chat with Andrea Slabutu to find out more about the company and how they can save us money!

Q1 Hi Andrea. Can you tell me a bit more about the service Travel Wifi offers?

Hi John, first of all thank you for giving us the opportunity of spreading the word about our service. Our business started with a simple idea: avoid data roaming charges when travelling abroad. I am sure that we have all experienced to some degree the shock of huge phone bills by the time we got home from a journey. It’s hard to keep on surfing the internet, checking emails, sending photos or listening to music when away. The WiFi service provided at hotels can be a serious headache most of times: slow connection, limited data bundles and expensive when exceeding the limit. Our service comes in to help the traveller avoid data roaming charges completely while staying connected anywhere and at any time. We provide Wifi solutions to anyone travelling abroad, whether it is a family holiday, a business trip or just a city getaway with your special one or your friends, Travel Wifi offers mobile internet solution on a short-term rental basis targeting anyone on the road.

Q2 Can you explain how the process works for a customer if they’d like to avail of this. What equipment do they need?

The process is straightforward, the only equipment needed is a laptop / PC / smartphone or any WiFi enabled device. The first step is to visit our website , choose the package plan that best fits your needs, provide the necessary payment details and sit back while we will get the product delivered to your doorstep. We also provide pick up points at hotels across the country. For example if someone plans to visit Ireland on the St. Patrick’s Day and they will stay in Shelbourne Hotel, they can purchase the product online and have it at the reception desk ready for pick up on their first day of arrival. Some other hotels who we currently collaborate with are The Westbury, Radisson Blu in Galway, Fitzpatrick Castle, Aghadoe Heights in Killarney and Double Tree Hotel and we hope we will extend our list in the next couple of months. Our service as already mentioned is based on a rental set up, so part of the process is to send the device back or return it at the pick up point once the service term has expired. When we deliver the product to the customer we provide a return envelope with the stamp included so the only thing left to do is to place the product in the envelope provided then drop it in the post box.

Q3 What packages are available and how much do they cost?

Our package plans are flexible, they are designed to suit the needs of everyone who travels, whether you are a businessman, a family group or a couple. We offer four distinguished packages:
The White Package ranges from 3 to 5 days, it provides 3GB and it costs €39.00. To give you a rough idea, according to AT&T on average, with 3GB you can send/receive up to 4200 emails with attachments, 36 hours of streaming music, 600 web pages visited, 570 social media posts with photos, 5 hours of streaming video and up to 42 apps/songs downloaded. I think 3GB is more than enough to keep you busy during your 3 days trip.
The next package plan is the Green Package ranging up to one week rental, it comes with 10GB and it costs €59.00.
The Emerald Package plan runs up to two weeks and comprises of 20GB and the price is €69.00. The Gold Package provides 4 weeks rental service with up to 45 GB and it costs €89.00. As you can see we offer tremendous data bundles, so far none of our customers have exceeded their limits on on their packages from the very start we always wanted our customers to enjoy surfing on the internet and share their experience with others during their journey without being worried about their phone bills.

Q4 What type of connection speeds can people expect to achieve using your device?

Our wifi device is lightweight, it fits the size of your palm and it is easy to carry anywhere. You can drop it in your handbag or in your pocket and stay connected to your own Wifi anywhere you go. It connects up to 5 devices (smart phones, tablets or laptops) simultaneously and it provides high internet speed of 21 Mbps. It also comes with T3i technology which offers up to 20% more upload/ download speed compared to non-T3i devices. Even in the worst signal conditions or congested networks. Its battery life lasts up to 5 hours and if you happen to be on the road driving to your next destination and the battery is almost gone don’t worry, we have thought of that, our wifi device comes with both car and wall charger and also a USB cable.

Q5 What countries is it available in and have you any plans to expand?

Our Wifi unit has 99% population coverage in Ireland, UK, Italy, Austria, Denmark and Sweden. We are also planning to expand to the U.S. market very shortly. Expanding to the U.S.A. will be a great boost to our business and hopefully if this will bring us success we will then be able to further extend to other countries within Europe and why not Australia and New Zealand.

Q6 Compared to data roaming charges, on average, how much are people saving by using your service?

When roaming in Ireland, a visitor from within the EU will typically be charged €0.45 per MB of data used, so thats €450.00 per GB. A visitor from outside the EU can be charged €0.99 per MB, thats €999.00 per GB. Our smallest package package for €39.00 comes with 3GB !!!

Q7 Can you tell me a bit more about the people behind Travel Wifi?

Michael Hearty is the CEO of the company and Tom Hearty is the Director. Michael started the company in 2013. It was borne out the frustrations he encountered himself when travelling with a young family in Europe. There was little point travelling with Laptops, smart phones & tablets if he couldn’t keep them connected without having to pay a small fortune .The company comprises of 3 individuals so far including myself but we plan in the next few months to bring more people on board.

Q8 Apart from your website, is there any other way or do you plan on introducing any other way to avail of your service?

Yes ! Our product is stocked in an increasing amount of hotels in Ireland. We also hope to sign distribution deals with an airline in the near future. We are exhibiting at the ITOA (Incoming Travel Agents Association of Ireland) conference In March and we hope to align ourselves with a number of tour operators.
