Our business campsited.com is the easy way to find and book campsites.

How are you different?

We’re different because we’re solving a problem that hasn’t been tackled yet for people. We’re making it easy to find and book campsites around the world, because right now it’s totally fragmented and deeply frustrating. If you want to book a hotel you go to booking.com, a self-stay to Airbnb, or a hostel to Hostelworld. If however you want to find and book a campsite where do you go?

The genesis of the company was when I (founder – Finán O’Donoghue) went online a few years back to book a camping holiday abroad for my family. I expected to find every campsite – camping, touring, holiday parks and glamping sites – consolidated in one user-friendly website. Instead I literally spent days trawling through dozens of websites of varying quality, in an excruciating attempt to choose and book a trip. In the end I gave up. The other reason we’re different is we’re not just solving a problem for consumers. We’re building on from campsited.com to give features and technology to park owners that will make their lives easier. We’ve learned from talking to owners, that they are often extremely time poor. They need really user-friendly, integrated technology solutions, that help them, not hinder them. There is tonnes of scope here. So, we’ve plans to launch a number of exciting features, which will help park owners market and run their parks more efficiently. We’ll help them save time and money, and increase revenues.

Why will the company / product do well?

The company will do well first and foremost because of the problems we’re solving. To solve these problems really well, we’ll give our customers the most user-friendly software and best overall experience. We have an obsessive focus on this, and we’ll never be 100% happy that we have nailed it. This is because needs change and technology changes. In two years time who knows where technology will be. We need to adapt and iterate, adapt and iterate. Always striving to give people the best possible experience. Everything we do is researched with our target audience before, during and after design. If it doesn’t meet and exceed the needs of the people using it, it’s changed and changed again until it does. This customer centric approach is in our DNA, and I think having it so will help us do well. Plus we have a feature or two up our sleeve, which will definitely help us drive things on. They are top secret for the moment though!

Where are you based?

We’re based in Dublin, but the team extends as far as Poland.

When was the company launched?

Work on campsited.com began in mid 2013 and the company launched in early 2015.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

We’ve had lots of wins that are contenders for the title of “biggest win”. A recent one however is our uplift in activity in 2016. Bookings are up 500% and enquires are up 1,100%. We’re pleased with this, but it’s really only a big toe on the first rung of the ladder for us.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?

campsited.com is a classic two sided market. On one side you have campsites of all shapes and sizes. From traditional campsites, to touring, holiday, and glamping parks. We’ve made campsited.com extremely flexible, so any kind of campsite can join. We did this because we want to give consumers the best choice possible.

On the other side of the market you have the consumer – general holiday-makers, outdoor buffs, campers, and caravan and camper van enthusiasts. This includes a broad spectrum of people, for example, young families looking to spend time together, millennials wanting to go on adventures, executives looking to embark on a digital detox.

Tell us about your team?

We are a fairly lean team. There are three of us based in Dublin. We have a development partner in Poland, a digital marketing partner in Dublin and a two part time people on the content side of the house. We are currently raising our next round of investment. With this we will grow the full time team considerably in the next 12 to 18 months.

What are you long term plans for your product / company?

Our mission is to make booking a camping holiday anywhere in the world as easy as possible for people. We won’t rest until we’ve achieved that.

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

For us that would be phone + laptop combined. Being able to work anywhere is brilliant, and because we are on the move so much, this is essential. Not that long ago, when “wireless” working started to develop, it was very different. We couldn’t get through any day without it now. Plus, for those of us with children, the phone is a life-saver when the kids wake at some crazy hour of the morning, and bounce into the bedroom full of the joys! It allows us grab that extra 20 minutes of snooze time!

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

If there was a gadget that could record thoughts when doing non work related stuff, like having a shower, or going for a run, it would be brilliant. Many of our best ideas come to us then. We do our best to remember everything, but inevitably forget some of the detail. The devil is in the detail right 🙂

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?

There is one thing. From the very start, we made a decision to use our technology to try and encourage people to spend more time outdoors. There is no doubt that being in nature has exponential benefits for us physically and mentally. There is tonnes of research to back it up. We are very excited about this and feel there is lots of scope for us here. To live by what we preach, we’ve just announced that each of the team will get an extra week off, every year, to go camping! Where better to start than with ourselves right.
