What is ALOHA Mental Arithmetic Ireland?

ALOHA Mental Arithmetic is an after schools programme for children aged 5 – 13 years age. The programme, which is currently taught in 38 countries worldwide, used the abacus and other other methods to aid children’s mental development. It is based on three key points; calculating with the abacus, mental arithmetic and didactic games.

What makes us different!

The programme is designed specifically for children between 5 and 13 years of age and contributes to their mental development in a fun-filled way. Throughout the programme, students exercise both the right and left hemispheres of the brain simultaneously, making the most of their intellectual ability

Research has shown that using the abacus improves children’s ability to calculate mental equations and develop cognitive abilities such as attention, concentration, creativity, imagination, spatial orientation, listening, analytical ability, photographic memory and observation. Students develop the ability to visualise a math problem by regular practise of the abacus and eventually the student will learn to solve the problem without the aid. Much more than a math class, ALOHA Mental Arithmetic classes include didactic games and group activities.

Research has found that children will experience an improvement in all their school subjects, especially in Mathematics.

Lorcan O’Neill, Director of ALOHA Mental Arithmetic, comments “We’re more than a Math Programme, ALOHA Mental Arithmetic develops skills in children that will benefit them in their future career

Let’s look at the Irish market and the opportunities ahead

There are approximately 600,000 children currently aged 5 – 13 years of age!

According to a review carried out by the Department of Education between 2011 – 2014, it shows

Irish Mathematic students are falling behind other student’s in high performing countries such as China, Hong Kong and Korea. While the performance of students in Math’s has improved (see below), there is a huge gap between Ireland’s best students and those in other countries.

Research does indicate the need for teachers, parents and children in disadvantaged or rural areas need more support.

In February 2016 the Department of Education and Science carried out an Interim Review of the National Strategy to Improve Literacy and Numeracy among Children and Young People 2011 – 2020, across all levels of Education.

There is a significant drive by the Government to improve the development of children in literacy and numeracy skills. The % of students taking higher level math’s at Junior and Leaving certificate levels have improved since 2010, but the aim is to continue to increase those %’s.

However, results published in 2015 which shows of greater concern that the failure rate has risen to 5.2 per cent, up from 4.2 per cent in 2014, 3.3 per cent in 2013 and 2.3 per cent in 2012!

But last year’s results indicate that to improve the math’s ability of Leaving Cert students there needs to be greater focus on teaching standards. Latest figures (2015) show there are only 5,443 qualified math’s teachers on the Teaching Council register, compared with 8,015 qualified English teachers and 6,628 qualified History teachers.

Why is this important to an ALOHA franchisee?

The aim of ALOHA Mental Arithmetic Ireland is to be present in the after school education process in SCHOOLS ultimately. If schools / teachers / principals are being driven to achieve better results and standards, the aim is to have ALOHA at the forefront of this after school offering. Therefore, with the right support, commitment and drive, the ALOHA business in Ireland will grow substantially.
