1 min pitch for what you are doing now?
Moyee Coffee and the FairChain Foundation are working to deliver the first fully-blockchain traceable coffee. Blockchain introduces much needed transparency to the coffee industry which is big on purchasing certificates but small on delivering on its grand promises. Our FairChain mission is all about creating more value, jobs and profit at origin in coffee-producing countries like Ethiopia and Kenya. Today these coffee-producing countries receive just 2% of the added value of a typical cup of coffee. We’re working to change that. We see Blockchain as key to our ambition of driving more value to coffee farmers, giving them access to credit and working towards a living income. This is all while delivering coffee in the top 5% of beans in the world.
How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?
We had a good 2018. We supply radically good coffee from Ethiopia and Kenya to tech companies, co-working spaces and other workplaces around Ireland. We were successful in bringing on board Dogpatch Labs, the Tara Building and NDRC to the FairChain movement last year. This is on top of some great tech companies who are drinking our coffee every day, like Slack, Groupon, Pivotal and Asavie. We would have loved to bring on board some larger customers in 2018 in the food service space but we’re starting to make in-roads with catering partners now to achieve this in 2019.
What are your plans for the future?
We’re looking to grow our presence in the B2B coffee space in Ireland, bringing on board more companies who want great coffee at work but also share our impact goals. In particular, we’re attending the Dublin Tech Summit on 10th and 11th April to find the right companies who want to work with us to develop a blockchain coffee dock at their workplace. We have a direct relationship with our coffee farmers and are unique in the coffee industry in that we can map your cup of coffee from the first mile to the last mile in Ireland. We are now looking to find Irish tech companies who would love the idea of tipping the coffee farmer directly each morning – through an active token – that goes right back to an infrastructure or training project in Ethiopia. In the longer term, we’re looking to spread the FairChain movement to the UK and also to work with partners here to the develop the first blockchain coffee shop as a home for our revolution.
What will you be talking about at this event?
Killian Stokes will be pitching at the Scale X stage at the Dublin Tech Summit 3.30pm on Wednesday 10th April. We will focus on our Blockchain for Good project and our lessons and challenges to date with implenting blockchain technology to a largely unautomated supply chain. We’ll also be looking to find companies who share both our love of great coffee and our impact goals and work with them to develop a blockchain coffee dock in their workplace.
What inspired you to attend it?
We’re always looking to speak at events where we can talk about coffee, social impact and how technology can bring radical transparency to your supply chain, whatever the industry you’re involved in. We think there’s a great mix of companies at the Dublin Tech Summit this year, as well as some fantastic speakers who will be speaking on this subjects. In particular we’re trying to contribute to the conversation on blockchain and social impact as it’s an area that maybe has received less attention so far.
Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?
We’re big fans of the Innovation Show by Aidan McCullen. It’s a great way to keep up with developlments in tech, supply chains, disruption and how companies from large to small can adapt to a changing world.
How can people find out more about what you are working on?
Apart from our social media, we’re trying to be more active with a regular newsletter to our FairChain Fans! You can sign up on moyeecoffee.ie and we’re sending everything from coffee brewing tips, special offers and a longer Saturday morning read on the coffee industry, our Blockchain for Good Project and how people can contribute to our social goals.
