With Teresa Murray, In charge of PR and Events for NCI.
Blockchain – more than a buzzword is on at 1 pm, Thursday 30th May, in National College of Ireland’s campus on Mayor Square, Dublin 1
National College of Ireland is hosting the 5th plenary meeting of the ISO Technical Committee on Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies. This is very much a working conference, setting the worldwide proprietary, industrial and commercial standards for blockchain and DLT. Blockchain – more than a buzzword is the only public-facing event at the heart of a busy week for the global blockchain and DLT community.
For all the buzz about Blockchain, it can be hard for anyone outside tech and finance (even INSIDE tech and finance) to pin down what it actually is. This lecture is given by the very people setting the international standards for the thing! This will give you the inside gen on Blockchain.
Terry Landers (Chair of NSAI ICT committee – and Microsoft Regional Standards Officer for EMEA) will explain the reasons for and importance of setting international standards, and Craig Dunn (Chair of ISO TC on Blockchain and DLT – and chair of the Australian Government’s Fintech Advisory Group) will demystify the buzzword, explaining what Blockchain actually is and how it can be applied.
‘Blockchain’ is *the* current buzzword. Media Post Research Intelligencer declared it the most overrated buzzword of 2018 because so many companies seemed to include it in their releases purely to get free coverage. A number of companies saw their share prices double or more when they changed their trading names to include blockchain – even when they didn’t actually do anything that involved blockchain! And at the same time, Cisco predicts that 10% of the world’s wealth will be on blockchain by 2027. The only way for you to work out what is just flimflam and what is true use of a cutting edge technology is to understand what blockchain actually is.
Attending also gives you the chance to be part of history – experts from 40 countries are attending NCI this week, developing some of the first ever standards in Blockchain. You can follow #Standards4Blockchain to see their work in progress, or you can pop along to NCI for lunchtime on May 30th, and share your own blockchain takeaways.
This is a free event, but registration is required, you can register for the event here: http://info.ncirl.ie/blockchain_buzzword
As this event runs from 1-2pm, a light lunch will be provided.
