Fintech innovation and disruption. Blockchain insights with Don and Alex Tapscott

What will you be talking about at this event?

Blockchain began with humble origins as the enabling technology of cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, but has since caught on like wild fire, both exciting and terrifying business leaders in virtually every industry- from financial services to shipping, media to manufacturing. This rational exuberance is warranted as blockchain represents the missing piece to our digital economy- a transactional platform that allow anyone, anywhere to transact, do business, build trust and value peer to peer. The potential of this technology to transform the economic power grid is real and it’s happening now. If 2016 was the year of mass awareness, 2017 is the year of mass adoption and disruption. In this talk, Alex Tapscott will help you understand what’s coming next for blockchain and how to not only survive but thrive in this new era of the internet.

1 min pitch for what you are doing now?

After the success of Blockchain Revolution, my co-author Don Tapscott and I launched the Blockchain Research Institute. The BRI will be conducting the definitive investigation into blockchain strategy for businesses and governments – exploring use-cases, implementation challenges, and recommendations. This multi-million-dollar initiative is funded by governments, non-profit organizations, and the private sector.

In addition, I have launched an investment business under the umbrella of my company Northwest Passage Ventures, which will be deploying capital in the digital asset, cryptocurrency and traditional blockchain VC ecosystem. I will be revealing more at the appropriate time.

The Digital Maturity Journey, key concepts in digital transformation at DES – Digital Business World Congress

How were the last 12 months, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?

A lot has happened over the last 12 months, both in the blockchain ecosystem and for me personally. We have seen terrific excitement, awareness and action by many large companies and institutions. Notably, I was invited to join the IMF’s special advisory board on fintech as a founding member. The group is really focussed primarily on the impact of blockchain on business. Also, My advisory firm – Northwest Passage Ventures – took off and is now actively supporting several startups in the blockchain space.

What are your plans for the future?

With Blockchain Revolution, we sought to understand the potential that this technology could have on the world. Over the last year however, it has produced more questions than answers. Over the next 18 months, the Blockchain Research Institute will seek to understand and provide answers to these questions – ultimately paving the way for business and government leaders to make some big changes.

Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?

There are lots of good sources out there to find credible information about the emerging blockchain space. Arguably the most exciting thing happening today is how blockchain is fundamentally transforming the venture capital industry. Developers have now raised hundreds of millions of dollars for ventures through distributed crowdsales, dubbed “ICOs” for initial coin offerings. Smith and Crown is the best aggregator of information for this fast-moving space, with access to whitepapers, technical details, financial metrics and other valuable information.
