BlackBerry problems now worldwide

Following on from our original post 2 days ago it now seems the problem has spread from EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Asia) to the rest of the world with reports from Argentina to Australia of BlackBerry services being down. RIM (the makers of BlackBerry) posted the following on their Facebook page:

The messaging and browsing delays being experienced by BlackBerry users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM’s infrastructure. Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested. As a result, a large backlog of data was generated, and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience, and we will continue to keep you informed.

So BlackBerry users are going to have to hang on a little while longer for this to be sorted. While I’m not excusing this in anyway (I’m as frustrated as the next person!) I have to say as a BlackBerry user since 2004 this is the first time that I remember such a down time with the system. Hopefully this exception will prove the rule that BlackBerry services are reliable and that it’s sorted soon. It seems to have made RIM more open to informing users too which can only be a good thing. Stay tuned on ITN for updates on this.
