Attention! The power of simple decisions in a distracted world, by Rob Hatch, reviewed

Review of this book by Martin Eastwood, see more about Rob Hatch on his website here.

’When we are able to consciously direct our time and attention to things that matter to us, we are able to transform our lives’’. Attention! By Rob Hatch shares a pretty bleak view on just how distracted human beings have become by technology and modern communication.

Thankfully, it also offers some real-life examples of how we can go about reclaiming our attention to focus more on what serves us, and to do so on our own terms.

What were the key takeaways?

• We are not allowing our brains the time and space for sorting and synthesizing the information we take in each day.
• Social media, technology, tools, and platforms can all be customised to our liking and it is your job to make sure it’s filled with the information and resources that serve you.
• Good habits are powerful we are biologically prone to them, create good habits that serve you and direct your attention where you would like it to go.
• Decisions that can be made earlier should be made earlier, to avoid hitting a snag. For example, laying out your clothes the night before.
• Guard your attention to avoid getting caught in a loop of stimulus and response. Look at everything in your way, get clear about what you want, and make simple decisions to make it happen.

‘Attention!’: Holistic view on the modern world

Attention! touches on many of the main advisory points you may have read in similar books in the past. However, it does a good job at taking a holistic view of where our attention is currently going in the modern world and offers great advice on how we can refocus and reclaim our attention to guide us towards a better, more intentional life.
