By @SimonCocking interview with Kevin McCaffrey, the founder and CEO of Tr3Dent, thought leaders in the area of 3D Data Visualization. Previously featured here in our Business Showcase.

NEW cityscape 1

What does Tr3dent do?

Our mission is visualising data in 3D with specific focus on IoT (Internet of Things). Above and below are some images of the dynamic and interactive 3D models that we have created over the past year. We are all about representing data in a way that is more understandable and consumable; to allow the end user to visually explore and identify opportunities within their own data which leads them to make more efficient business decisions. Seeing data in a more interactive environment such as the images above allows the user to highlight relevant information in their data as opposed to traditional formats such as spreadsheet, graphs and charts.

Our job is turning image one into image two.

NEW MTN Flow 1

Who are you inspired by in the field?

We take a large amount of inspiration for new methods of empowering business users with exciting, productive and decision-grade tools from non-traditional sources such as the Gaming industry. In addition thought leaders we follow include David McCandless and Visualising Data.  In addition, we take inspiration from the world around us to provide realistic visual context for the data which allows users to see their data in a natural 3D environment that does not require interpretation.

NEW process flow 1

What trends are you excited by?

There are many exciting trends that will drive Data Visualisation over the coming years.

We would agree with Gartner who say that “the most influential factor in the digital workplace is consumerisation”.  Business users are expecting more of enterprise applications in terms of how the work and the flexibility provided to enable users to have a similar UI/UX to that of the applications used in their personal lives.

We are experiencing a new Industrial Revolution; the Digital Economy is requiring companies to deal with four critical drivers; IoT (Internet of Everything – Machines, People & Processes), Big Data, Competition from new sources and finally Ecosystems.  Only those companies that embrace Business Transformation will be successful.

From a technological perspective the work Microsoft are doing with the HoloLens is incredibly exciting, as are the advancements made in the areas of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, whether using tools such as the Microsoft HoloLens, Oculus Rift and the Leap Motion controller.

Where do you think it can go in the next 18 months or so / what cool data visualisations are you hoping to bring to market?

Without giving away too much, we are targeting the release of our Tr3Dent Enterprise Visualisation Platform in late 2016.  This will enable enterprise clients to address many of their current issues they are having to trying to obtain decision grade information through visual exploration.  The platform is also intended to support several VR and AR which will enable users to see their data in ways never seen before.

You mention the gaming industry, could you give some specific examples that you like?

At the moment we are using the Xbox Kinect and the Leap motion controller for certain clients to provide them for a fully interactive experience so both of these really interest us and ones that we see huge potential in with regards to visualising data.

As mentioned previously, we are very interested in VR and AR. Leaving their potential capabilities for visualising data aside, we think this type of gaming is so cool and will become much more prominent in the next 18 months or so when it becomes more accessible and affordable.

The Microsoft HoloLens and the Oculus Rift are technologies that all the guys in the office would love to get their hands on. The integration of these and other VR tools are the future of gaming.
