This is something I always tell young entrepreneurs before they take the leap into business. Get to know yourself and your own interests first. Otherwise you’ll find yourself in an industry not aligned to yourself and when the going gets tough you’ll quit, whereas if your business is aligned to your interests you’ll have that extra determination to persevere and make it a success
In business, it’s a hard truth, but things never go as you expect. There will always be roadblocks that you haven’t accounted for. It’s so important to be able to adapt and always stay on your toes. When an unforeseen circumstance presents itself, how you react is so important.
This sounds like an obvious one but it is so crucial. Often people look to hire people similar to themselves as they want to work with people on their wavelength. I think the best approach to recruitment is break down the areas where you lack in yourself, from there, you can literally look for candidates that have those lacking areas as their main strengths. This goes for skills as much as it goes for personality and characteristics.
For all the perfectionists out there, this is a hard pill to swallow. The reality is that when you start out, you don’t have the budget, experience or time to have everything perfect. Getting something moving is so much more important than obsessing over the little details.
Being in start-up mode is like being in a bubble, you can get so focused on the work at hand that you forget to take a step back every now and again to reflect and assess. I recommend scheduling weekly time to assess what’s working and what’s not, you’ll be amazed and how more efficiently you could be running!
