When and where is it on?

World Values Day is a global event, being held on the 15th October this year. Celebrations this year will be online across social media, with people sharing what they value and how they are putting it into action. With the theme this year being ‘Values in Action’, we are encouraging people to CHOOSE a value, ACT on it and SHARE it online using the #WorldValuesDay hashtag! There will also be online events for people to attend, and challenges available for individuals, businesses, schools and organisations to take part in.

How many years has it been going?

On 15th October 2020, World Values Day will return for a fifth year, at a time when there has rarely been such a global focus on human values. This now well-established awareness day that celebrates and encourages living in alignment with our values has grown enormously since it started in 2016. The hashtag #WorldValuesDay has reached more than 60 million people in over 100 countries around the globe, alongside activities ranging from large conferences and organised events to countless individual and collective acts of kindness and humanity.

What was the inspiration to start it?

The ethos of World Values Day is a simple one. When we are aware of our core values and live in alignment with them, it has a major positive impact not just on us but on those around us. We believe that, by putting our values into action together, we can change the world. This is why the theme for World Values Day 2020 is Values in Action.

This year, more than ever, the world needs the support and inspiration that values provide. Values are at the heart of our individual and societal response to the Covid-19 pandemic, just as they are in the Black Lives Matter movement, the climate change movement, and so many other key concerns that define our time. Values really matter. They are our motivators, they shape our lives and make us what we are. They can help us change our lives, and they can help us transform the society we live in too, as long as we let them guide us.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

As this is a global event, we are hoping to get #WorldValuesDay trending online with those taking part sharing how they’ve put their values into action for the day, and encourage people to think about (and share) what they value most. People can get as involved as they would like to, as it is personal to each individual, business, organisation and school what they value most.

We have lots of tools, activities and resources available online, and events available for people to attend online too – from mentoring sessions with life coaches to an online baking class centred around exploring values with children through baking together!

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

All online events are currently free for people to attend, and are designed to help people explore their own values and understand their importance in our lives. This year has been a difficult one and we have much left to do in order to recover and build back better to provide a good future for ourselves and our children to come. Values are integral in this, and that’s why we’ve provided lots of tools, resources and guides online for people to access via our website.

Who will be speaking?

Currently, we have events scheduled with Resilience.TV, women’s leadership coach and mentor Penny de Valk, Ada Velonis, Founder of Marmalade + Kindness, and Melanie Weeks, MSc (Coaching Psychology). However, new events and activities are being added in the run-up to the day, with plenty of other opportunities available so please keep checking in on our Events and Activities Page to stay up to date, or sign up to our newsletter/follow us on social media!

What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?

Follow us on social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram) and get involved online to get the most out of this year! We are hoping to spread the message far and wide so get involved as much as you would like to, to help cultivate your understanding of the values you hold in order to make the world a better place. We also recommend checking out our website and signing up to our newsletter for updates leading up to the day.

How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?

You can take part in World Values Day simply by posting on social media using the hashtag #WorldValuesDay on October 15th this year! Our individual events can be signed up to using the information provided via our Events and Activities Page.

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?

If you’re wondering why you should get involved, a lot is at stake this year, from the global struggles around COVID-19 and the extremist challenges to our democracies to the ever-deepening impact of the climate crisis. The way we respond to all of these is all to do with our values. They are at the heart of everything we hold dear and they are what we look to when tough choices have to be made.

What kind of world are we making for ourselves? The way ahead has seldom looked so uncertain and dangerous. Those human values that are common to us all will help us find our way.
