Why I relocated to West Cork, to work for up and coming technology company Spearline

What is your background briefly?

I am a PR and marketing professional with over a decade of experience gained through both consultancy and in-house roles. I recently took up an in-house role at Spearline in Skibbereen, Co Cork, which is very exciting and rewarding.

I hold a PRII Certificate in Crisis Communications and Issues Management, a PRII Certificate in PR Account Management, a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations (PR) and Event Management from the Fitzwilliam Institute, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Accounting from the University of Limerick.

Does it seem like a logical background to what you do now?

Absolutely, I always say that every experience is a stepping stone. My qualifications and experience weave together, especially in terms of developing business acumen and being a versatile professional. An interesting subject area like Spearline facilitates great PR and marketing.

1 minute pitch for what you are doing now?

I am a Senior Marketing Manager, PR and Brand Development, Lead Generation at Spearline, a technology company that proactively tests phone numbers for audio quality and connectivity globally.

Against the dynamic, entrepreneurial and pioneering backdrop at Spearline, my work centres around building brand awareness for Spearline by strategically communicating with its key stakeholders.

Why did you get involved with Spearline?

Spearline is a progressive company run by innovative leaders. Co-Founders, Kevin Buckley, CEO and Matthew Lawlor, CTO are visionaries. I read an interview about their story and it was so impressive, honest and uplifting that I knew I wanted to work for their company.

Why did you want to move back to West Cork?

I am originally from Clonakilty and, having spent the best part of 10 years in Limerick and another year in Cork City, the West Cork lifestyle drew me back. I met so many people through Network Ireland West Cork who had lived elsewhere and returned home and the appeal was contagious.

A PR and marketing opportunity arose at Spearline. I had a conversation with my now colleague Caroline Leonard, Senior Marketing Manager at Spearline, who is also a fellow Network Ireland West Cork committee member, and she spoke so passionately about Spearline that I wanted to know more.

What are the pros and cons of West Cork?

Pros:

Nearer to my family

Surrounded by driven, yet down to earth, people

Greater wellbeing from being near the sea!

Less traffic

Variety – there is so much on our doorstep in West Cork

Cons:

No late night shopping!

What would you say to others considering leaving the city to work in a more rural/smaller area?

I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

There’s so much to be said for rural living – on my first day of work at Spearline, I met five cars on the road on my 30 minute drive to work. In comparison to the backlog of traffic that I was used to in cities, it was so refreshing.

Everything you need is on your doorstep and everyone is connected so linking with dynamic people is easy.
