1 min pitch for what you are doing now?
Aiming to connect more people in Africa to opportunities as the CMO of the classifieds group Ringier One Africa Media (ROAM). Conceptually, this means working to democratise our markets by allowing users to compare prices and features across our inventory of cars, property, electronics and other items. As well as helping people find their next career step with our jobs portals. Practically, this means a lot of coordinating with people to get stuff done and training an awesome group of talented young African marketers.
How were the last 12 months, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?
We’ve been combining 2 companies (Ringier & One Africa Media) into one. This is a rare opportunity to see how a former competitor has approached the same market with different tactics in full Analytics KPI glory. What’s hard is getting the buy-in for which tactics to continue with. It’s a lot of a/b testing and analysis and this can be a black hole of time. The biggest wins have been reaching position 0 with rich snippets, SEOing the website architecture (not a small feat on a classifieds website with the sheer number of filter options) and my personal favourite launching a chat bot which helps Kenyans find a job.
What are your plans for the future?
Further my work with chatbot marketing, VR & AR and SERP features. But I’d also like to get deeper into voice search. And travel for the first time to South America to check the salt flats of Bolivia off my travel bucket list.
What will you be talking about at this event? (brief taster)
Where we are heading with visual marketing. How your brand can engage audiences with 360 photos and videos. How you can win in SEO with product markup. What is happening with VR and how will the impact your business. All the fun things.
What inspired you to attend it?
Making a friend at FriendsofSerach in Amsterdam.
Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?
Moz (like everyone else in SEO I guess), Search Engine Journal (but here I aam biased as I am a contributor) and other “common” reads for a digital marketer. But honestly, I like more to talk to people at conferences, chat about topics face to face. I feel one good conversation can give more insights than ten good articles.
How can people find out more about what you are working on?
Come to Africa. Or follow me on Twitter @jes_scholz & read SearchEngineJournal.
Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?
I’ll also be speaking at SearchLove in London this year for anyone who can’t make it to Dublin.
