WhatsApp Arrives On Desktops

WhatsApp is not exclusively for smartphones anymore. The chat application which was bought by Facebook for more than $19 billion will now extend its service so that it can be used on desktop and laptop computers.

The app now allows people to send and receive messages using a website, in addition to existing mobile apps. WhatsApp will now be able to reach more devices as Facebook seeks to fuel the worlds communication services. The service has more than 600 million users and is one of the largest social chat platforms around.

WhatsApp is not alone in making this effort to bring its service to desktops. Apple’s iMessage platform start as mobile only before the company brought it to desktops in the form of a stock app. The WhatsApp web service which launched on Wednesday for Android, Blackberry and Windows phone devices will “mirror” conversations on the smartphone app.

Of course an internet connection will be required for the mirroring of messages to take place, however Facebook are already working on a way around this and are said to be tying WhatsApp access into its Internet.org project.

The web service will not work with iPhones however, Jan Koum, WhatsApp CEO said that “platform limitations” kept it from working with the iPhone. There are no indications at the moment if it will be able to work for iPhones.
