Interesting interview with Brian Roe from Servecentric who are a managed Hosting & IT Services provider. You can get in touch with them at cloud@servecentric.com or call +353 (0)1 448 1406.
What is Servecentric Enterprise Cloud?
Servecentric Enterprise Cloud (SEC) is a self service, Pay as you go, public cloud platform. The platform provides users with the ability to independently provision memory, CPU and storage in line with their applications’ requirements.
How are you different from Microsoft, Amazon, Google and other similar offerings?
From an organisational perspective, SEC is independently owned and operated in Dublin, Ireland. As an Irish owned company, data sovereignty issues (e.g. relating to Cloud Act) are not concerns.
From a technical perspective, the solution focuses on providing easy to use, non-bundled Infrastructure (IaaS) services. Commonly with hyperscale providers, the focus is on provision of bundled IaaS and PaaS (Platform as a Service) solutions. For certain users, the deep portfolio of PaaS solutions offered by Azure, AWS and GCP can be advantageous, but equally, working in these environments can also be confusing and lead to significant pricing uncertainty.
What is the technology stack behind your cloud?
Servecentric Enterprise Cloud uses a set of technologies developed and maintained by CloudSigma. CloudSigma supports over a dozen cloud locations across Europe, Asia, North America and Australia. The platform is built on KVM (Kernal-based Virtual Machine) hypervisor technology. Users access resources through a simple to use browser-based WebApp and via our powerful API.
From a hardware perspective, all user-accessible resources are power by HPE Apollo enterprise class compute and storage solutions.
What is the relationship between Cloudsigma and Servecentric?
Servecentric is an established Data Centre and Hosting services organisation based in Dublin. Servecentric owns Servecentric Enterprise Cloud and is responsible for the Data Centre facility, hardware infrastructure, network, hybrid connects and managed services.
Cloudsigma owns and supports the software and portal (WebApp) application. Cloudsigma also provides 24 x 7 chat and email support services for both Servecentric and our end users.
From both legal and commercial perspectives, all client relationships are directly with Servecentric.
What about costs?
Typically, in real production scenarios, Servecentric Enterprise Cloud can provide savings in the region of 35-50% over similar workloads in Azure or AWS. Additionally (and in contrast to hyperscale providers), projected costs are very easy to calculate accurately prior to commitment.
It can be challenging to migrate. How do you handle this?
SEC can run almost any x86 application, unmodified. This facilitates easy migration of workloads without requirements for wholesale changes in operating systems, rebuilds etc. There are a number of migration tools available and Servecentric’s team of engineers and Solutions Architects can assist with migration, both for POCs and final migrations of live production systems.
What Operating Systems do you support?
SEC is built to be as flexible as possible and supports any x86 operating system. This can help in terms of potentially reducing costs and migration of complex legacy applications.
If I want to migrate my applications back out of Servecentric Enterprise Cloud, how is this handled?
As SEC is built to run applications and OSs without modification, migration to and from the cloud is equally feasible. This is not the case with all clouds, for example when hypervisor modifications are required. This ease of migration in both directions also lends itself to hybrid and multi-cloud scenarios.
What Hybrid options are available?
For clients based in our Dublin Data Centre, we can provide 1Gb or 10Gb links between their infrastructure and Servecentric Enterprise Cloud. This provides a number of benefits including ultra-low latency connectivity, significant cost savings on port allocation, elimination of expensive direct carrier telecom services, and exclusion of egress charges incurred with other services
What about support?
This is a key difference in the SEC offering. As standard, every user has access to online chat support with average response time of just 30 seconds, 24x7x365! Additionally, there are a range of additional supplemental support services and managed services (monitoring, patching, backup etc.) available directly through Servecentric.
In short…
The real winners are simplicity, access to technical resources to assist with POCs etc. and hybrid opportunities. Additionally, from a performance perspective, SEC provides optimum storage performance for all SSD instances (not just larger sizes) and does not offer “Standard” (oversubscribed) entry level CPU options. Costs are fully transparent and can be easily projected and contained with Servecentric’s linear pricing model.
