The UK is a melting pot of stellar technology companies, including names like Amazon, Google, Facebook and IBM. These businesses can be found in the London-Cambridge-Oxford golden triangle as well as northern cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff and Edinburgh. The North has become an even more appealing destination for big tech outfits wanting to take advantage of cheaper running costs.
But before you run off to search for jobs in Liverpool on JobRapido, you need to know what these companies are looking for in an employee. Tech companies are usually thinking ahead of the times and may not be seeking what you first imagine.
#1 Not Just About Coding
The era of tech companies hunting down coders is pretty much over. That’s not to say that being a coder will not land you a job – but tech firms want more than just coders. They want people who can communicate and evidence excellent soft skills. Tech geniuses are sometimes stigmatised as lacking interpersonal skills which is of course not true and a blanket statement. However, that doesn’t mean tech companies are going to stop emphasising the need for both.
#2 Understanding of Startups
The business world is growing and that is because of an exponential rise in people creating their own businesses and startup companies. Tech companies of all sizes often cater to these entrepreneurs and become their service providers. In that vein, these tech outfits require people who understand the process of setting up a business in the early years.
#3 Genuine Interest in the WHOLE of the Company
Some tech experts go seeking jobs at firms because they have a passion for their talent and want to make a career from it. You can stand out from the crowd if you search for a job that lets you explore your passion and also take an interest in other departments within the business. For example, you may be a software developer but want to learn more about data analytics. Fostering professionals with this attitude allows tech companies to create better working relationships and leverage innovation.
#4 Self Starters
Earlier it was mentioned how more people are setting up their own businesses and creating their own empires. Tech businesses will also favour people who have done this themselves. If you are a website builder and have created your own web design agency, it shows tech firms that you are passionate, self-driven and hungry for success. All things that will score you points with tech employers.
The Other Stuff Counts As Well
It goes without saying that you also need a killer CV, relevant tech skills with products such as Python and JavaScript and so on. But you can read about calls for these skills anywhere on the internet. Above was an insight into what tech firms are looking for but not telling anyone. Now go find your new tech job!
