Vodafone Ireland has announced that it is extending its live 5G network test-bed coverage in the Dublin Docklands, following the successful launch of the technology in November 2018. Vodafone will more than double the 5G footprint currently available as it prepares for increased demand from businesses looking to test 5G technology in the Docklands area.
Vodafone launched Ireland’s first live 5G commercial test-bed to give businesses, entrepreneurs and academia the unique opportunity to trial this new technology, which allows them to validate new products and services that require mobile high-speeds and the high-efficiency that 5G delivers. This coverage extension allows for more businesses to trial 5G products prior to launch in the general market place, as Vodafone prepares to launch their 5G network commercially.
Vodafone and Ericsson also recently partnered with NOVA UCD, a hub for new ventures and entrepreneurs at University College Dublin, to create a 5G accelerator programme. Launched in November, the combination of this partnership and the testbed provides a unique end-to-end 5G framework in Ireland. Vodafone will continue to work with existing partners and the industry in general to extend the opportunities for collaboration.
Separately, Vodafone has also announced that it is the first network in Ireland to launch 4G Calling (VoLTE) to its customers. 4G calling uses Vodafone’s 4G network to carry voice calls for customers with compatible handsets, allowing them to enjoy faster call set up times (up to twice as fast) and high definition voice quality.
VoLTE has built-in reliability thanks to a seamless handover to the more traditional 2G/3G networks if a user moves out of 4G coverage. VoLTE is integrated into the phone as a native dialler which means there is no need to use an additional app, to make a call providing a better, more seamless experience for customers. In addition, customers making a voice call and using data at the same time now will benefit by staying on the 4G network for both
Wi-Fi Calling (Voice over Wi-Fi) is also now available with Vodafone allowing customers to make and receive calls from more locations in Ireland – all that is required is WiFi and a compatible handset. This innovative technology helps to eliminate mobile blackspots in the home or office if there is a strong Wi-Fi connection but weak/poor indoor mobile coverage. An added benefit of both services is that customers on a call over WiFi can seamlessly handover the call to the 4G network while on the move from the home or office to the outdoors.
Further reflecting Vodafone’s ongoing investment in its network, the company is today announcing that its mobile network has been named ‘Best in Test’ for the Irish market by P3 Communications for the fourth year in a row. P3 is an international leading company in independent consulting, testing and engineering services.
Following a benchmark of the three largest operators in November 2018, Vodafone was found to be the ‘Best in Test’ for making and receiving mobile calls and the ‘Best Network’ for mobile data services like video streaming, web-browsing and file transfers scoring 853 out of a possible 1000 points – the highest score ever achieved in Ireland in this benchmark.
Didier Clavero, Vodafone Ireland’s recently appointed CTO said “At Vodafone, we continuously invest in our network to provide our customers with the best, unrivalled network experience, and are fully committed to continuing to providing new and enhanced technologies.
“Since entering the Irish market 15 years ago, Vodafone has been the single biggest investor in new technology in the Irish telecoms industry, with over €2 billion invested to date in building and maintaining the network. With over 98% 4G population coverage across Ireland, we continually work hard to maintain our position as the leading voice and data mobile provider in the country. We are delighted to be recognised and awarded by P3 for the fourth consecutive year.”
“Today we continue that on-going commitment by delivering an enhanced customer experience through the launch of additional innovative solutions. This includes supporting businesses through the expansion of our Dublin Docklands 5G test-bed, and the launch of new mobile technology – VoLTE & VoWiFi. This constant focus on new advanced technology is to ensure we continue to deliver a world-class telecoms infrastructure for our customers in Ireland long into the future.”
