When and where is it on?

The Virtual Symposium on Inter- and Intra-person Variability in the Human Brain will be held online, November, 4-6, 2019. Book tickets here

How many years has it been going?

Virtual Symposiums are a new initiative of Sapien Labs and began just this year. The Virtual Symposium on Inter- and Intra-person Variability in the Human Brain is the second in our series of what we hope will be many online symposiums. We had 1,000 registrants at our virtual symposium on Analytical Approaches and Applications to EEG in June.

Virtual Symposium, Inter and Intra-person Variability

What was the inspiration to start it?

A key element of Sapien Labs’ vision is to enable a global view of the diversity of the human brain. Given that human neuroscience efforts are sparse in most parts of the world, we work to engender interest in these topics of research and seed new research programs in underrepresented regions across the world. by The Virtual Symposiums are one aspect of this effort, providing an inclusive platform that allows current researchers and those considering the field an opportunity to learn about current research and interact with the international research community. This contrasts to most scientific conferences which are either exclusive groups or expensive to attend.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

This symposium will bring together researchers to explore various aspects of both inter-person and intra-person differences in the brain. This includes an understanding of how the brain changes across the lifespan from early childhood development to aging,  a view into various ways in which the environment influences the physiology and function of the brain and how differences in the behavior of our brain physiology dictate our cognition, capabilities and behavior.

The talks include research studies that take a range of approaches from studying the dynamic behavior of the brain using various imaging techniques such as fMRI and EEG to structural aspects and readouts of cognitive and behavioral outcomes. The primary common theme will be that they explore the differences and variability and the implications for brain health and behavior.

Variability in the Human Brain, November, 4th, 6th, 2019

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about a wide breadth of research, getting both an understanding of the research methods as well different kinds of real research results.  The panel discussions and Q&A will also provide opportunities for attendees to interact directly with the speakers.  Students considering a research career in human neuroscience will gain from these various perspectives to define their own research directions and can also attend a tutorial session on some aspects of analysis.

In addition, we hope that open Q&A sessions can also foster collaborations among researchers on important topics in this field. Furthermore, resources and talks are posted for attendees after the talk.  Some of the topics attendees can expect to learn about during the symposium are:

– How exercise and diet alter your brain structure and physiology

– How cell phones have changed brain physiology

– The impact of space travel on the human brain

– How the brain changes in response to environment from birth to adolescence

– How the brain ages and how to slow down these effects

– Methods for ‘fingerprinting’ individual brains

– Ways in which humans differ in their perception of smells and images

– And much more

Who will be speaking?

We have 14 speakers lined up to give talks. They include:
– Dr. Michael W. Cole, Rutgers University
– Dr. Xiaoping Hu, University of California, Riverside
– Dr. Rogier Kievit, Cambridge University
– Dr. Gennady Knyazev, Institute of Physiology and Basic Medicine, Novosibirsk Russia
– Dr. Kate Mills, University of Oregon
– Dr. Vladimir Miskovic, Binghamton University, SUNY
– Dr. Donna Roberts, Medical University of South Carolina
– Dr. Chelsea Stillman, University of Pittsburgh
– Dr. John Sullivan, Sport Scientist and Clinical Sport Psychologist
– Dr. Tara Thiagarajan, Sapien Labs
– Dr. Casey Trimmer, Firmenich
– Dr. Lucina Uddin, University of Miami – Dr. Michael Webster, University of Nevada, Reno
– Dr. Gagan Wig, Center for Vital Longevity, School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, University of Texas at Dallas

What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?

– Register soon, while there is still space available. We will be sending out details regarding logistics and logging into the online platform shortly before the event. – Because the symposium is online, it’s helpful to have a strong internet connection. However, if you miss any of the sessions, we will be making recordings available immediately following the conference. – We recommend attending sessions in real time, because it will enable you to ask questions of speakers.

How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?

We have space for 1,000 attendees to join the symposium. Registration will close on 31 October.

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?

We believe that these virtual symposiums are a way to create broader access to high quality content that forwards the scientific agenda. As an organization, we are working to build resources that can enable human neuroscience across the globe through our Lab Talk blog, through our tutorial content on our website, as well as through our virtual symposiums.
