Virgin Media Business announced its partnership with Dublin City Council to deliver free ‘superfast’ public WiFi in over 30 locations.
Virgin Media Business has activated its wireless infrastructure to deliver a boost to 30 different locations in Dublin with the roll-out of a new, fast public WiFi service. This is a part of WiFi4EU, a program to further connect communities through the city.
Over a three-year partnership with the City Council’s Smart Dublin program, an initiative designed to enhance digital skills, literacy and accelerate innovation across the city. This is funded through the EU and Department of Rural and Community Development, the WiFi4EU program is part of a €120 million Europe-wide plan to provide companies with better Wi-Fi in public spaces.
The new free WiFi service will offer speeds of up to 500Mbps, which will allow for faster mobile internet browsing and data downloads for community buildings and public places.
Virgin Media spokespeople
Jamie Cudden, Smart City Lead for Dublin City Council said “We are delighted to partner with Virgin Media Business to deliver public Wi-Fi services across the city under the WiFi4EU program. This program will support connectivity in areas of the city that need it most with a particular emphasis on strengthening community engagement and supporting wider digital innovation initiatives.”
Aidan D’Arcy, Director of Business at Virgin Media Ireland said “We are extremely excited to be selected by Dublin City Council to be the official provider of both the Wi-Fi and broadband infrastructure as part of the WiFi4EU initiative. Our expertise in offering cutting-edge broadband speeds is playing a crucial role in enabling businesses, residents and visitors to stay connected, to keep trading, and to build vibrant and digitally inclusive communities going forward.”
500Mbps refers to megabits per second, 500Mbps means potentially 62.5 megabytes of download/upload per second.
