Virgin Media Ireland has reached a long-term agreement with Naturgy Ireland that will introduce a 100% renewal energy supply across its operations in Ireland.
This renewable energy agreement will power Virgin Media’s main offices, contact centre, TV studios, data centres and regional transmission sites across Ireland and will support our ongoing commitments in reducing our carbon footprint.
Peter McCarthy, VP of Legal and Corporate Affairs at Virgin Media said: “Across Virgin Media, we’re looking at where our energy comes from and whether there’s a greener alternative. We know energy is one of our biggest areas of opportunity and our continuous aim is to achieve more sustainable solutions towards reducing our carbon footprint. Technology and innovation are at the core of everything Virgin Media does and this partnership is another example of working with a market-leading business energy suppliers to support environmental sustainability and climate action throughout our operations.
“Our 100% renewables goal, while long-term and aspirational, reflects our determination to do our part in Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon future, and reinforces our commitment to take action across our operations.”
Barry Murphy, Commercial Director of Naturgy Ireland said: “We understand that no two companies are the same; so, we have developed a tailored solution that meets Virgin Media’s specific requirements. Naturgy was the first supplier in Ireland to achieve a 100% green electricity rating for our customers back in 2012, and the first shipper in Ireland to supply renewable gas to our customers in Ireland during 2020. We source our renewable green electricity by purchasing it from renewable generators, across a range of technologies on the island of Ireland. Today we are presenting Virgin Media with their Certificate of using 100% renewable energy. By selecting Naturgy for their supply of electricity, Virgin Media has saved the equivalent of 58,560. trees by eliminating Scope 2 emissions of 2,374.91 tCO2e (tonnes of carbon dioxide CO2 equivalent) in 2019.”
Virgin Media is continuously building a more environmentally sustainable company, from improving the fuel efficiency of vans in its fleet to designing energy-efficient products for use in our customers’ homes. To get there, we are focusing on sustainable innovation in areas of Energy and Emissions, Products and Experiences. We are also combining our commitments to include community service where, in 2019, almost 40% of our workforce volunteered in our CSR programmes, and our commitment to protect our customers’ data, and also helping to keep children safe online while making sure our digital technology works in everyone’s best interests.
