videoDoc announces extension of free doctor service to 374,000 USI students

USI students can take off to Europe this summer with medical peace of mind as videoDoc announces a summer extension of its free online doctor care service for all 374,000 students who are members of USI.

Doctors on videoDoc are available for free consultations 7 days a week to students traveling through Europe and under EU directive 2012/52/EU, prescriptions obtained through videoDoc can be filled at any pharmacy in the EU. Students heading to the US or beyond can also avail of the videoDoc service to receive medical advice and diagnosis.

Since the launch of the videoDoc / USI free online doctor initiative earlier this year, there have been a growing number of students using the service. The most common ailments students sought medical help for included contraception, the common cold, acne, influenza, candida, viral intestinal infections, insomnia and anxiety.

USI President Michael Kerrigan welcomed the extension stating: “Since USI partnered with videoDoc in February, we’ve see students signing up to the service at an incredible rate. This mobile service is free for all USI members, saving students up to €50 for a visit to a GP without leaving their house. Students heading off on J1s to work in the US or taking the time to travel the EU can use this service free of charge. We’d recommend signing up now and creating an account so you can use the service this summer while you’re abroad.”

Research into the success of the initiative uncovered that USI students are the most mobile of all videoDoc’s patients with 72% electing to use the mobile app and only 28% a desktop device. 85% of all USI student consultations used video with 15% opting for a phone call with the doctor.

videoDoc is Ireland’s largest online doctor service offering consultations anywhere a patient can access the internet, including when on holidays or working for the summer overseas. By downloading the recently revamped videoDoc app, students who are members of USI anywhere in the world can have a secure video consultation with a doctor in Ireland, 7 days a week, without the need to make an appointment.

All videoDoc doctors are GPs registered with the Irish Medical Council, with at least two years on the Specialist Register, and have been fully trained to provide remote health services. The videoDoc online doctor service is available from 8am to 10pm, 7 days a week.
