With just under two weeks until polling day in Ireland, Twitter is today launching a custom election emoji to make it easy for people who are following the event, to participate in the #GE2020 public conversation.
The emoji will be a visual representation of a ballot box with an Irish flag draped around it and will be triggered by the widely adopted election hashtag #GE2020. The emoji will also be triggered by the Irish language election hashtag; #Togh2020 – this is to encourage a truly community-led and civic conversation on Twitter throughout this General Election.
The emoji will run for the duration of the campaign and will be fun and colourful for those who want to discover, engage with and follow the election conversation.
Public Policy Manager for Europe, Ronan Costello said: ‘’We’re delighted to launch our custom election emoji today ahead of the upcoming vote. Our aim, as always, is to encourage and promote the public conversation on Twitter, particularly during election cycles. Tools like this emoji help to bring the wider election conversation together for the community on our platform. The emoji is specific to the Irish electorate in design and, like many of the products we launch, is guided by how people are already using Twitter – the hashtags that activate it have been adopted by the community and are trending each day of the campaign.
‘’We want to help people to have a healthy, open, and safe civic discussion on Twitter. make it easy for those on the service to engage with and follow the national conversation”.
