Describe the company – the elevator pitch …

ZipJet is an ondemand laundry service. With either our app or online in your browser you can schedule to have your laundry picked up, and one of our drivers will return it to you within 48 hours freshly washed, folded or hanging and ready to wear. So instead of spending your Saturdays at home with dirty laundry you can enjoy time with friends and family.

How are you different?

We’re different from other laundry services in that we emphasize convenience in every aspect of our business. That means we partner with drivers who know the cities best, which ensures your laundry is delivered consistently on time. Rocket Internet has been a fantastic partner for us, providing the support and knowledge to help us grow the business the way we wanted.

Where are you based? How long will you stay there?

We’re located in Dublin 2. Thankfully the internet is great. In the digital age it’s as necessary as water. To start we built a five person staff in Dublin along with four full time drivers. And we’re looking to hire more as soon as we get settled into the market.

When was the company launched?

We were first operational in London in November 2014. Shortly after we became active in our base city, Berlin. Now a little background about how we started. Lorenzo, my CoFounder, and I previously worked in consulting. That meant a lot of time on the road, followed by weekends at home. Those 48 hours go by really quick. It was hard to budget enough time for friends and family and then finish your errands before the next trip Monday morning. Laundry and dry cleaning was often the biggest hassle. We wanted to find an easier way to clean shirts. That’s how ZipJet was born.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

Without a doubt it’s the move to Dublin. That’s a goal we set early on and to be able to achieve it within the first year is a milestone moment for us. Ireland is clearly on the rise and we saw a huge potential for the market. I spoke to some guys from Zalando, who a couple of months ago opened a tech centre in the capital’s Silicon Docks. They underpinned our expansion plans and provided us with valuable insights. It obviously doesn’t hurt that we are one of the first ondemand laundry services on the Green Island.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?

Our data from London and Berlin clearly shows that most of our customers are urban professionals. Someone who lives in or close to the city centre and has a busy work schedule that limits the time they can spend doing things they enjoy, such as playing football in the park, having a beer with friends or taking the family out to dinner. Those are infinitely more fun than sitting in a laundromat or at home sorting the whites from the colours.

 Tell us about your team?

We have around 50 employees that hail from all over the world. That’s the great thing about working in markets like Berlin and London (and now Dublin)? it’s not hard to sell talented people on the benefits of living in diverse, cosmopolitan environments. And we’re growing too, so drop us a line if you’d like to come work with us.

What are your long term plans for your product / company?

Long term we hope to have ZipJet in every major European city. That’s the vision at least. But in order to accomplish that there are plenty of shortterm goals we need to accomplish. We’re always looking to improve every aspect of our business. That’s what happens when you put two consultants in charge of a company! (Florian)

What are your favourite tech gadgets?

So I joined the wearable craze and bought a FitBit. I like to stay active and the raw data shows just how active I really am. Growing up I played a lot of team sports, so I’m a naturally competitive person. Now I like to see if I can top my average each week for steps and burned calories. Plus a lot of my best ideas come to me while I’m exercising. (Lorenzo) I’d be lost without my iPhone. I’ve managed to optimize so many areas of my life with just a few taps on a screen, whether it’s scheduling a laundry pickup, having groceries delivered or using an app like Yelp to find a great restaurant when I’m in Dublin.

What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

We’d love to put a GoPro camera on a ZipJet driver and show his or her perspective for an entire day. Whether it’s the morning ride through a stillwakingup city, meeting with customers or greeting the folks at the laundry facility, there’s just a variety to the day. That’s something we’d love to show to our customers.
