Interview with Ed Byrne, Co-Founder & Operations Director
Describe the company, the elevator pitch …
So Sell it is an online trading marketplace born in Ireland with a global vision. With over 3 Billion classified adverts placed globally each year across 1,100 platforms, there are too many choices, and often confusing, frustrating and slow. Our proposition was different, centred on the user experience. So Sell It offers the option to swap, sell or buy high end smart phones, game consoles and tablets. We also offer options for businesses to sell their products online. We close the time gap from advertising to selling an item and all from the convenience of your PC, tablet or phone.
How are you different?
We are the only trading platform which offers users the opportunity to receive a free instant offer on an item. If they refuse the offer they can still decide to upload a free advert to sell to the general public at a price they wish to receive. We currently only make offers on the latest electronic items but we are working to expand the categories available.
We pride ourselves on promoting an ethical trading marketplace and are very proud of our “So Adopt Me” initiative with The Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA). We don’t allow the upload of any animals to sell on our site, only registered adoption shelters can upload animals for adoption.
We are still in early stages of development. We have some real exciting innovations to be launched in the coming months.
Why will the company / product do well?
Our approach is to have a creative global vison of how the business will be developed. We will bring new products and services to market that will differentiate us from all indirect competition. Our core platform is built and scalable to any jurisdiction, in any language and with any currency. Watch out for our domain launches overseas soon.
Where are you based, how is the broadband?
We are based in the Guinness Enterprise Centre, Dublin, Ireland. We love it in there, it provides the perfect environment for a start-up business to learn, grow and receive advice and assistance from many other businesses and like-minded entrepreneurs. The broadband is great, it has never let us down so far, which is important as we are heavily dependent on it.
When was the company launched?
The company was launched in Ireland (www.sosellit.ie) in April 2014 and in the UK (www.sosellit.co.uk) in September. We are beta testing another jurisdiction presently and plan to be launched and live in numerous countries within the next 6 months.
What have been your biggest wins to date?
Our first is probably being recognised as a High Potential Start Up with Enterprise Ireland. The resources and mentorship Enterprise Ireland gave us access to really helped to refine our business model and open doors to meet angel investors.
We have forged some strong relationships and partnerships in our short existence, Moneybush.net for example have helped us in connecting with well-matched investors. Other partnerships include our electronic resellers and our strong relationship with the DSPCA in forming our unique So Adopt Me service.
Since our launch the business has been a finalist in 3 web based awards including Best Start-Up and Best Mobile App. Our biggest development win to date has been the launch of our full e-commerce solution, the implementation of the software went live this week and we believe it represents a big step forward for the business.
What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?
We are trying to attract both male and females between 18 – 65 who may wish to buy, sell, swap or receive a direct offer on their tablets, game consoles or smartphones online.
Tell us about your team?
We have a great team complementing each other. Our CEO, Glen Reid has a background in finance, logistics and start-ups, with a massive amount of senior management experience, and 4 exits already under his belt. Luke Siudut is our CTO, poached from Microsoft, coding since he was 15, building over 40 e-commerce websites. Finally, I handle all customer facing issues as the Operations Director. My background was the retail auction industry so I have plenty of experience dealing with people looking to buy and sell items.
What are you long term plans for your product / company?
The long term plan for So Sell it is to create online trading marketplaces worldwide. Our goal is to keep innovating and revolutionise how people buy and sell their unwanted goods. To keep our proposition unique we are working towards building partnerships with other resellers so that we can provide “Instant Offers” on other categories beyond the latest electronic gadgets.
What are your favourite tech gadgets?
My favourite tech gadget is actually my iPhone. The iPhone allows me to keep track of my mails on the move but more relevant to the business it allows me to manage and track the company’s Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn activity 24/7.
What tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?
We are lucky in that nearly all the latest tech gadgets help us in some way, either by providing a platform for our website to be seen or allowing us to make an instant offer in buying them from people.
