Three selects Equinix for state-of-the-art data centre facility

Three, Ireland’s leading mobile data operator, has selected Equinix to deploy new state-of-the-art data centre services as part of its €365m IT and network investment.

Equinix is the world-leader in data centre and interconnection services that boast’s an average uptime of more than 99.9999% globally. As part of the initiative, Three will invest significantly over five years in a new data centre plus interconnection services and infrastructure in Equinix’s DB4 data centre in Northwest Business Park, Dublin.

The facility, which is in addition to Three’s existing data centre infrastructure, will strengthen Three’s geo-redundancy, ensuring continued network service for its 2 million customers. Three’s business customers can also keep their IT systems secure and reliable, cost effectively, with co-location services available at the data centre. In addition, Three will house its own billing, IVR and customer care systems on-site, protected by seven layers of physical security as well as industry-leading power and cooling facilities.

Commenting on the announcement, David Hennessy, CTO at Three, said, “We are continuing to roll out our €365 million network and IT system upgrade which will deliver more coverage, better speeds and a cutting edge customer experience.

“Since the acquisition of O2 in 2014, we have needed to transform our data centre infrastructure.  As the mobile operator that carries the most mobile data, we have to ensure that we have the necessary infrastructure in place to support our customers’ usage. This new data centre investment strengthens our overall service and ensures that Three continues to be a leading, innovative and cost effective telecommunications provider both now and into the future.”

Maurice Mortell, Equinix’s Managing Director for Ireland and Emerging Markets, added “As applications become more complex and the volume of data traffic rises worldwide, network service providers are increasingly simplifying their network topologies for improved speed and flexibility, without compromising security. As Three works through its digital transformation project, it requires a data centre and interconnection partner to provide it with the necessary connectivity, security, redundancy, and access to global markets. Equinix is delighted to be working closely with Three on this exciting journey.”
