We look at this new book by Matt Abrahams. You can see more about
How to Think Faster, Talk Smarter
This is a topic that probably appeals to all of us. Who doesn’t sometimes replay things that we said with hindsight. Naturally if we had been able to better process what it was that we really wanted to say, then it might have come out closer to what we intended rather than sometimes the way it actually did.
Therefore if the author, Matt Abrahams can nail this topic then the book will have a lot to offer. The fact that he has a podcast is also helpful as it is the perfect way to be in a slightly pressurised situation where you have to think on your feet, only evaluating what to say next while your guest is currently responding to your last question.
The book is in two sections, with six useful chapters, following a logical train of thought to help you improve your delivery and thinking on the go. The prose is accessible, coherent and plausible, always good when advocating how to adapt and evolve how you think. He keeps drilling down to the need to be precise, what is your key message, what are you really trying to say. And then exploring the most succinct way to do this.
On one hand this may seem like common sense when describing it here, but, at the same time, we have listened to and watched enough poor speakers to know that the world would be a better place with better speakers. If this is an area you are self aware enough to know that you could do better this will then be a very helpful book to read and act upon.

In Think Faster, Talk Smarter, Stanford lecturer, podcast host, and communication expert Matt Abrahams provides tangible, actionable skills to help even the most anxious of speakers succeed when speaking spontaneously. Drawing on stories from his clients and students, he offers best practices for navigating Q&A sessions, shining in job interviews, providing effective feedback, making small talk, fixing faux pas, persuading others, and handling other impromptu speaking tasks.
