It wasn’t so long ago that nobody had heard of live streaming. For most of us, it was a foreign concept, and then suddenly it exploded onto the scene in the most dramatic and flamboyant of ways. Becoming a feature of social media platforms, online gaming, and everything in-between, it changed the face of entertainment forever.

Live streaming is the broadcasting of real-time, live video content to an audience via online channels. Utilised by everyone from Instagram celebrities even through to online casino sites that provide games with live dealers, it’s meant to create a more authentic and immersive experience than its pre-planned, edited counterpart. The idea is that it’s ‘uncut’ – that there are no frills or fanciness to water down the reality of what we’re shown.

But this has resulted in some severe misconceptions as to the work that goes into fashioning such material. Many consider live streaming to be a lazier alternative to traditional methods of content creation, but as those who’ve created, it will know, this is far from the case.

Here, we take a look at the blood, sweat, and tears behind the scenes of live video content.

A complicated juggling act

As anyone who’s created video content can attest, there’s a lot of work that goes into the making of that final edit. The raw, uncut footage you begin with is often a jumbled-up mess, which needs much refining and shaping to turn it into the sort of quality content you’re willing to share online.

In the world of live streaming, these retrospective alterations are impossible. The content creator has just one chance to get it right, and that’s not always easy. In fact, those who’ve given it a go can attest that it takes some real talent and practice to accomplish, let alone to make such a feat appear effortless.

Many who are involved in online communities will have considered trying their hand at it. From video gamers who’ve watched live streams via platforms like Twitch and YouTube through to Instagram aficionados with a dedicated following, you’re likely to have seen such content onscreen and asked yourself how hard it can really be.

However, the honest answer is this: that successful live streaming is a complex juggling act. Requiring video game streamers, for example, to simultaneously maintain their concentration on the game while also remaining suitably entertaining, cognisant of messages, and capable of promoting their brand – not to mention good enough to be worth watching – it is a big ask for anyone to do it successfully.

The utility of live streaming

Yet despite these complications, live streaming most certainly has its applications, so long as the individual wielding it understands what they’re doing. Let’s return to the example of online casino gaming. At its heart, a live casino is about providing the player with the best and most authentic experience from the comfort of their own home. Taking the individual out of their everyday life and transposing them into the exciting world of the casino, it is manned by experts: experienced dealers who know exactly how to present themselves in a live environment while adhering to a strict set of rules.

These same skills are also necessary for those who wish, for instance, to promote themselves as a pro gamer or build their online following. Before you commit, you need to understand what’s required to be successful: a smooth manner, charismatic persona, and an understanding of how to present yourself well while all the while thinking on your feet.

This is not easy, but if you’re someone who’s able to tick these boxes, live streaming content can most certainly prove useful. Helping to showcase your talent and create an authentic and engaging experience, it is something the internet audience is crying out for. People want raw, real, and unedited. They desire immersive interaction and the ability to connect on a real level and in real time, and for this, there is no better medium.

So, would we recommend it? The answer is that live streaming can be hugely beneficial, but only when wielded by those who understand where its strengths – and their own – lay. Used well, it can refine a brand and create a real connection with an audience; used badly, and it appears shoddy and unprofessional. It’s a brilliant tool for the modern age, but one that ought only to be utilised by those who truly understand its power and its potential.
