“The Prosecutor” is the story of one man’s pursuit of justice for the voiceless. Some books have the magic of making you feel like you are in the moment and living through the story as you read it, this book was no exception.
By the time I had reached the second chapter, I was absolutely gripped.
The author Nazir Afzal who later goes on to become ‘The Prosecutor’ gives a great insight into his early years, the events of which encouraged him to become interested in injustice.
His family emigrated from Pakistan to Birmingham in the UK, and he experienced racism and psychical abuse from as early as 13 years of age.
After taking a beating from a group of bullies he recalled his father’s reaction to his pleas for justice – ‘There is no justice’ he said.
This statement would inspire an incredible career that resulted in real change.
The book sheds a light on the widespread injustices that have occurred and continue to occur in our world, from racism to child trafficking and the imbalance of ethnic minorities assigned to important positions such as Police Constables.
This imbalance poorly reflects the communities they represent and it provoked much thought.
In relation to the justice systems discussed, some of the systems and issues are only specific to the UK. However, I feel there are great lessons to be learned that are relevant across the world.
It becomes clear the critical role that a prosecutor has in delivering justice and this was the path chosen by Nazir in his quest to pursue justice for the voiceless.
One of the most important issues raised was the issue of modern-day prosecutors being silenced of their free speech. ‘
’When I look at leaders in my field nowadays I can see how the thirst for justice and change is being drained from them. If they step out of line and say something challenging on social media, for example, you won’t hear from them again. They will be silenced. This terrifies me because I know nothing will get better if our leaders are weakened in this way’’.
The Prosecutor is a fantastic read. So much so that the few hours it took me to read it flew past very quickly, and I don’t always finish a book in one sitting. I would highly recommend you pick up a copy.
