We look at this short concise guide to some of the current and upcoming trends in medicine and Medtech, The Future of Medicine, written by James Temperton, Digital Editor of Wired UK, due to be published on 25 March 2021. You will also be able to listen to our podcast with him early next week also. The book is available from Penguin Random House here.
The Future of Medicine: how we will enjoy longer, healthier lives by James Temperton, reviewed
This is a short concise spin through the exciting new developments taking place in medicine. The first chapter begins well with a compelling story about a small child with an extremely rare disease. The possible cure for it required taking steps that had never been done before, and ultimately offering hope for other children that faced similar terminal diagnosis. Like a well paced movie you are left sure of the outcome until the end of the chapter. In mentioning the outline to the better half in the house they then demanded to know how it played out.
As you might expect from a writer from Wired, the book is a crafted in a readable and accessible way, while still taking you into a deeper dive in terms of the science and what is happening behind the scenes. The books are aimed to pack a short punch, and in all three from the first batch to be released by Penguin RH / Wired it has been a success. We enjoyed this book, and would also be happy to pass it on to other general readers too.
Personalised and precision medicine is progressing rapidly and is a logical direction to go in, as by gender, race, and much much more we are all very different and one size rarely fits all. Similar there have been significant advances in cancer, and many, previously incurable strains are now treatable, bringing longer loss and less tragic early deaths, which is also explored in another chapter also. We enjoyed reading this book, would recommend it to others and strongly suggest you tune in next week for our podcast with the author.

In this brilliantly wide-ranging, one-stop guide WIRED journalist James Temperton outlines the medical revolutions that are transforming healthcare. He looks at the burgeoning immune therapies that could one day cure such life-threatening diseases as cancer. He explores the science – and ethics – of genetic engineering and its potential to create ‘designer babies’. He considers the role that cutting-edge medical research could play in the treatment of mental and neurological disorders ranging from depression to autism. And he addresses the fundamental question: could medical technology become so sophisticated that we witness the end of ageing?

People who survive a trip to ICU with Covid-19 are often left traumatised. Why? Amongst other things, the sensation of being put on ventilator can feel like being suffocated, on and off, for weeks at a time.
This is a harrowing story about Covid and PTSD https://t.co/av5lJqotqa
