By Simon Cocking, review of The Future Home in the 5G Era available here.
As the global pandemic has demonstrated, your home has become a new digital hub as important as your mobile device. The Future Home in the 5G Era provides a look into the window of how consumer lives will change tomorrow and a roadmap for companies to make 5G hyper-connected living a reality when we need it most.
It shows how the Future Home – enabled by 5G, cloud, security, AI, edge computing, eSIM and more – can provide consumers personalized services for remote-work from home, distance learning, healthcare, immersive entertainment and advanced aging care, while also yielding economic success for businesses.
The Future Home’s powerful services ecosystem will be a quantum leap from today’s fragmented smart home technology, effectively extending the boundaries of the home even beyond the traditional bounds of the physical, to ultimately make consumers feel ‘at home’ anywhere.
The Future Home in the 5G Era, reviewed
5G is coming, sooner or later. We have endured a push and pull period between being told that 5G is about to descend on us, and then hearing that the system is creaking and it won’t quite be with us, just yet. Either way, sooner or later, it is going to be more common, for more households very soon. The book begins with some future use cases of what a 5G enabled lifestyle might look like.
In some ways some aspects of these use cases seem almost quaint and a little understated, is that really all that it will enable us to do? Equally would I really want a video highlights of my recent exercise sent to my friends, and would they even care, being too busy playing out their own particular 5G enabled virtual reality.
Going for a walk with your parent, while they live thousands of miles away seems more likely. In many ways 5G potentially opens up really exciting possibilities and, hopefully, enables really exciting options that we can’t even imagine yet. Maybe it is then a little unfair, or wishful, to have liked this book to be a little more bold and ambitious about trying to image and gustimate would a future 5G world might bring us?
The book does address one of the most important aspects of the 5G world to consider – what does data privacy look like in a world where sharing of your data is also a prerequisite for many of the experiences you will want to embrace. Blockchain has been touted as a way to create an online blackbox of your data, accessible only selectively, and to the relevant people, at the relevant moment in time. Though as we have seen with Facebook’s deep and persistent betrayal of people’s privacy and data, it is always going to be a challenge to ensure that the right solution is found in a 5G world.
This book may not have all of the answers, but it is raising the right questions and provides a good starting point as we begin to tumble into the 5G world for better or worse.
