2020 (and 2021) saw most of us have to adjust to an online way of living, from working and studying from home to even doing our weekly food shop online.

Whilst the wonders of the internet gave us the opportunity to carry on life as normal as possible, including staying in touch with friends and family via social media and video calls – our increased online presence comes with many dangers, too.

Cybercrime can include many different things – including online fraud, phishing scams, and identity theft, and whilst we should never give out personal information, importantly – passwords and pin codes to people we don’t trust, many of us believe that it’s not just our responsibility to keep us safe from cybercrime.

VPNOverview.com have taken a look at some of the biggest countries in the world, how they’ve been hit by cybercrime, and more importantly what they’re doing about it.

They analysed a number of datasets on how 10 of some of the biggest countries have been affected by cybercrime, identity theft, and how they’re dealing with it – including their response to cybercrimes.

Taking this data they created a ranking table, to reveal which countries have been dealing with cybercrime, from best to worst.

The Countries Hit Hardest By Cybercrime And What They’re Doing To Stop It

Germany topped the ranking list, with a total score of 36 out of 40. The central European country was one of the least hit population-wise by cybercrime whilst simultaneously scoring 100% on their fight against cybercrime, including having a dedicated department to fighting cybercrime.

42% of online users in Germany also believed it’s the government’s responsibility to protect personal data – one of the highest numbers the research saw.

The United States was at the bottom of the table, with a score of only 24 out of 40 – being one of the worst-hit countries by both cybercrime and identity fraud was likely a contributing factor to their poor ranking, alongside only 29% of online users believing it’s the government’s responsibility to protect their personal information.
