Technology and arts come alive in Dublin 8

Today, The Digital Hub welcomes an 11-day exhibition titled ‘this is not a table’ created by Belfast-based, UK artist Robin Price, as part of its renewed focus and commitment to the digital arts sector in Dublin 8. The free exhibition at the Digital Exchange runs from Tuesday, 17 April until Saturday, 28 April from 12pm to 5pm each day excluding Sundays.

The title of this interactive piece refers to surrealist painter Rene Magritte, as well as an impassioned plea on a post-it note once left by the artist asking people to stop leaving things on the ping pong table. Robin likes to play with people’s ideas of what they are, what they could become and centres his work on interactivity and technological interventions.

This digital arts installation is a ping pong table that has been created by artist Robin Price using 4000 RGB LEDS under frosted polycarbonate.  Each bounce triggers audio-visual effects programmed in code which responds to the gestures of those who interact with it.

Commenting on ‘this is not a table’ artist Robin Price said: “The work intends to create a rare moment of pure joy that the user can refer back to after returning to the urban hellscape of modern life. The opportunity to show the work in The Digital Hub has been supportive as technology and code plays a huge role in my practice.”

Robin holds an MPhys in Theoretical Physics from the University of Wales, and a PhD in Composition and Creative Practice from the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Belfast. He practices works across a variety of disciplines including electronic, music, visuals, audience interactivity and creative technology. In his work, Robin alters everyday devices so the devices can be seen with a new fresh perspective. Robin’s work examines the inspiring possibilities of old, new, and even specially invented technologies and works with commonly understood objects.
