When and where is it on?

Technica is being held on November 9-10, 2019 at the Reckord Armory at the University of Maryland.

How many years has it been going?

This is our 5th annual anniversary!

What was the inspiration to start it?

Our founders wanted to introduce people who came from diverse backgrounds and identify as women or non-binary to tech.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

This year, we have a bunch of really cool workshops such as How to Navigate being a Woman in Tech and Intro to Design Thinking with JP Morgan and Chase. We’ll also have really exciting mini events like nail and body art and succulents!

5th Technica takes place November 9-10, 2019

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

In addition to our 24 hour hackathon, we’ll have a multitude of workshops hosted by our wonderful sponsors and student alumni. Also, we will have the sponsorship fair, where students will have the chance to network with over 30 sponsors.

Who will be speaking?

We’re really fortunate to have Liz Wessel as our keynote speaker and Karlie Kloss as our closing speaker this year.

A little bit about them:

Liz Wessel loves helping people get hired. She is the Co-Founder and CEO of WayUp, the go-to platform used by millions of early-career professionals to get hired, and by thousands of employers to scale their early career recruiting without scaling their recruiting teams — all with an emphasis on diversity and candidate experience.

Founded in July 2014, WayUp is a venture-backed startup based in NYC that has raised over $30M and was named by CNN as one of the 30 most innovative companies changing the world. WayUp has worked with top companies — including Fortune 500s, startups, and nonprofits — to help them reach, recruit, and engage with the next generation of talent. Liz has been featured as one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30, named one of the “18 Coolest Women in Silicon Valley” by Business Insider, and one of New York Business Journal’s “Most Influential Women.”

Liz has been a featured speaker at TedX, the Forbes 30 Under 30 Summit, Advertising Week, TechCrunch Disrupt, SXSW, NACE, and several other notable events. Before founding WayUp, Liz worked at Google as a Product Marketing Manager in California and India.

Karlie Kloss is an American supermodel & Founder of Kode with Klossy. Outside of modeling, Karlie Kloss’ passion for technology led her to take her first coding class in 2014. Inspired by code’s creativity and endless possibility, Karlie launched Kode With Klossy in 2015 to empower girls to learn to code and become leaders in tech. Now in its fourth year, the organization hosts free two-week summer coding camps where girls aged 13 to 18 explore concepts in front-end and back-end software engineering.

This summer, Kode With Klossy will be hosting free coding camps for 1,000 girls in 18 cities across the country. Karlie was recognized on the TIME 100 list for her philanthropic work as the founder of Kode With Klossy and was featured on the covers of Fast Company and Forbes for her work to scale the organization.

Karlie shares each of these experiences — hosting, modeling, coding, baking, traveling and more — on her YouTube channel, Klossy.

What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?

We actually just put up a new medium article on how to make the most of Technica weekend: https://medium.com/gotechnica/how-to-make-the-most-of-technica-weekend-a4584bae2f! Besides that, I would say that trying to interact with as many people as possible – booths, workshops, other participants, etc. is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people or gain a new perspective! You may gain a new friend, or new project ideas from simply striking up a conversation with a stranger!

How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?

Simply sign up on our website at https://gotechnica.org/. Registration will close on November 8, 2019. Once you sign up and get to the Reckord Armory, everything else is taken care of for the weekend!
