Technica is the worlds largest nonbinary and female hackathon that hopes to provide opportunities for those underrepresented in the tech world.

It is taking place virtually this year from October 24th- 25th. The virtual move has worked in Technica’s favour, as they have acquired registrants from six different continents. I spoke with a representative from the event, which is entering its sixth year running, about Technica and its objectives.

Technica: Building projects and sharing stories

We began by discussing the inspiration behind the event, and how Technica hope to create a safe working environment for all its attendees:

“Women, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people are underrepresented in the tech world. The goal of our founders was to create a safe space and welcoming environment where people from underrepresented genders can innovate, build projects, and share their stories.

Since then we have been going strong with multiple events planned and numerous corporate sponsors. Some of our corporate sponsors this year include Google, Microsoft, Bloomberg, Dropbox, Bank of America, and JPMorgan to name a few”.

We spoke of the different elements of the event that attendees that come to expect:

“Participants can team up with other participants and create something innovative. Throughout the event, there will be numerous workshops offered where participants can learn about a new topic or pick up a new cool tech skill.

In addition, we have many fun virtual events that participants can attend just to meet new people and relax. Participants can also enter competitions sponsored by our corporate sponsors, where they can earn cool prizes and network with others”.

The representative spoke in detail about the opportunities that will be presented to those in attendants:

“Technica offers the ability to connect with others with similar mindsets. Whether through teaming up with other participants or meeting others through virtual events, Technica will provide the resources for this to happen. Participants also have the opportunity to network with our corporate sponsors at virtual events”.

Technica: List of speakers

We moved on to discuss the different speakers that are attending, each guest coming from various backgrounds and professions:

“This year we will have Jewel Burks Solomon as our opening speaker. Jewel Burks Solomon is an advocate for representation and access to the technology industry.

She was featured as one of Forbes 30 under 30 in 2016 and is currently the head of Google for Startups in the US! Jewel Burks Solomon co-founded Partpic, a startup designed to streamline the purchase of maintenance and repair parts using computer vision.

Jewel and her team built groundbreaking technology poised to change the way people everywhere locate products.

The spokesperson shared some insightful tips about how viewers can fully get the most out of the Technica experience:

“Don’t be afraid! Join events to learn new things and meet new people. If you want to code with a team and don’t have one, No Worries! Technica has a designated time for you to talk to other hackers and form a team! You also don’t need to know how to code to attend.

Technica offers knowledgeable mentors, fun workshops, and helpful resources that will teach you everything you need to know”.

Before we finished, the representative of Technica stated how those interested can prepare themselves before the event begins:

“We will be providing sneak peeks of the event in the next week on our social media platforms so be sure to follow us on the respective platforms”.

Those interested participants can register at https://gotechnica.org//. Register as soon as possible since registration may close mid next week.
