Sometimes with a book like this you wonder who it is aimed at. A topic like this could easily have begun life as an online article, a listicle even. Reviewing Marr’s last book for Irish Tech News, that one was certainly a quick gallop through AI. So fast infact that it felt like all we were getting was the company corporate mission statements before rapidly moving onto the next business.

This book thankfully only covers 25 concepts, which does enable a slightly deeper dive into each of them. And yet. With this in mind we gave the book to a teenager who was thinking of studying genetics at college. Even for that potential reader the book was quickly returned to us with the comment that thanks, it was fine, but it didn’t really tell him much more than he already knew. This brings us back to our opening question, wondering who this book is aimed at.

Perhaps it was for the busy CEO with a short, European length flight to take, two hours tops perhaps. For the length that the book is, coming in at under 300 pages, it would have perhaps been no harm to go into a little more detail for those that wanted it. Otherwise, while thought provoking, at a high level, overall the author’s engagement with these interesting topics felt a little transitory and short lived.

For a quick dip into key trends this might be the book for you. If you want more substance you may well need to go elsewhere.
