You’ll be surprised at the most in-demand Tech skills in Dublin for September 2019 Programming Languages. I’ve analysed 1242 software job openings listed on IrishJobs.ie for Dublin at the start of September 2019 and the results are surprising.

Tech job hunters, The Top Tech skills required
There is a lot of hype online about Python and Machine Leaning and also about React for front-end development. Despite this hype, there are fewer jobs in these areas than expected. Given below are 7 charts which show the demand for:
- Database Technologies and Tools
- Web Development Technologies
- Developer Tools
- Cloud and Big Data Technologies
- Data Science Technologies
- Operating Systems
Programming Languages
The big 4 languages here are Java, JavaScript, C#, and Python. Given all the media hype, I’m surprised Python is in 4th place and thought it would have been 1st or 2nd. Unfortunately, the number of jobs requiring other languages is quite low.
Database Technologies and Tools
It’s plain to see that Microsoft SQL Server is the big winner here with far more jobs than MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle SQL. There is also a reasonable number of jobs requiring NoSQL as well.
I’ve also looked at the popularity of some Business Intelligence and Visualisation Tools here. SQL Server BI components such as SSIS, SSAS, and SSRS as well as tools like Power BI and Tableau are all in demand.
Web Development Technologies
The big shock for me here was that many job listings mention only JavaScript and do not specify a framework/ library. It’s also interesting to note that there are more jobs requiring Angular than React.
Developer Tools
Unsurprisingly, Git, Docker, Jira, and Jenkins are in demand. What may be surprising to find out is that a lot of job specs list MS Office and in particular Excel. Most developers are extremely proficient at MS Office buy may forget to list this as a skill on their CV.
Cloud and Big Data Technologies
No surprises here as AWS reigns supreme.
Data Science Technologies
Here I had to do things a little differently. As you can see, virtually no job specs listed specific Data Science libraries such as pandas and scikit-learn, however, if you do a search for more general keywords, you see there are many jobs on offer in this area. It’s interesting to see that more jobs list Data Engineering than Data Science or Machine Learning as a skill.
Operating Systems
Nearly every developer I know owns a Mac so it’s quite shocking to see that MacOS was only listed on 1 of the 1242 job specs!

Hopefully, this gave you an interesting insight into the demand for different skills in Dublin at present.
