TALENT FLOW FROM UK TO IRELAND REVERSES AS BREXIT EFFECT AND ECONOMIC RECOVERY FAVOUR IRELAND

The UK now accounts for the largest net migration to Ireland, with 21% of professional talent migrating to Ireland coming from the UK.

The flow of professional talent from the UK to Ireland has completely reversed in just six months, according to data released today by LinkedIn.

This turning of the tide may be due to the Brexit effect and the recovery of Ireland’s economy. Ireland continues to be a net beneficiary of talent migration, with more professionals moving to the country than departing from it.

Commenting on the data, Senior Director International Operations and Site Leader of LinkedIn Ireland, Sharon McCooey said,  “The flow of talent between the UK and Ireland has long been significant, but this year the combined forces of uncertainty in the UK and our continued recovery in Ireland, led by strong growth in Dublin, sees us welcome more British resident workers to Ireland than the reverse.”

According to LinkedIn’s data, the top five countries for professional talent migrating to Ireland were:

  1. United Kingdom – 21%
  2. Brazil – 18%
  3. India – 11%
  4. Australia – 6%
  5. Italy – 5%

Similar to previous reports, the latest data reveals that the software sector continues to be the largest beneficiary of skilled workers moving to Ireland. With over 900 software companies based in Ireland, there is a huge lure for technology professionals.

“There’s no surprise that the software industry remains the biggest lure for skilled workers moving to Ireland, underlining the glowing reputation of the indigenous firms and multinationals operating here,” said McCooey.

The overall top five sectors attracting professional talent from abroad were:

  1. Technology – Software
  2. Healthcare & Pharmaceutical
  3. HR/Recruitment
  4. Financial Services & Insurance
  5. Architecture & Engineering

However, many professionals based in Ireland are still choosing to leave the country. The top five net attractors abroad were:

  1. Switzerland – 22%
  2. Germany – 17%
  3. Canada – 15%
  4. Malta – 10%
  5. Poland – 4%

The top five sectors that departing Irish professionals joined abroad were:

  1. Media & Entertainment
  2. Oil & Energy
  3. Retail & Consumer Products
  4. Technology – Hardware
  5. Aero/Auto/Transport

“Ireland’s communities, businesses and leadership have built momentum behind the understanding that this is an attractive place to live and work. This is a trend that we expect to continue given that we will soon be the only English-speaking member of the European Union,” McCooey added.
